I would suggest not doing that. If it's a "critical path" course, it's best to take it early and not count on one's luck later.
Next year the course might be only available in the same timeslot as a required 3rd-year course. That happens a lot. Or it might not be offered til the winter semester next year.
And it seems departments usually don't know what they're going to offer in the spring/summer until February for sure.
Best thing to do for now is not worry at all, just keep checking the class in Mosaic every day and hope to get lucky there... someone's bound to drop out of the program between now and December, right? If that doesn't work, yup visiting the department in December and asking to get squeezed in is totally doable.
