Course Picking & Confusion
I'm starting to pick courses for all the four years in university now. I know what I want, which is a bachelor's degree in commerce and a minor in accounting (CA path). But, I'm a bit uncertain what courses to take. I've taken all three maths in high school; Advance Functions, Data Management and will soon complete Calculus.

For the "International/Cross-Cultural/Language Menu", must business students pick two courses out of the choices listed in the following site in order to graduate? http://registrar.mcmaster.ca /CALENDAR/year2008/sec_179.htm

I'm thinking of choosing GEOG 1HA3 and GEOG 1HB3.

I'm also wondering what this means, "All Anthropology courses except ANTHROP 1A03 if completed as part of the Business I requirements." So when I take this course, it won't be counted as one of the courses taken as international/cross-cultural/language because it is a required course to take in first year business?

What do you think of my course choices for Business I? Any course recommendations and such?
Business I requirements:http://registrar.mcmaster.ca /CALEN...08/sec_182.htm

Requirements (18 Units):
COMMERCE 1E03
GEOG 1HA3
COMP SCI 1BA3
ECON 1B03
ECON 1BB3
MATH 1M03

Electives (12 Units):
MATH 1B03
MATH 1C03
GEOG 1HB3
PSYCH 1A03 or ECON 2X03 (depends on the clarification whether or not first year business students can take upper level course work)

Anyone ever taken any of the courses I selected? If so, how are they in general? (eg, Do you take a lot of notes, do a lot of presentations and readings, etc. in these courses? How is the workload of these courses; are they heavy, medium or light? ) Who teaches these courses? Are they 'good' professors?

What percent is CA of 5.0? Is it 50%?

Is there conflicting information with 1 and 3d in the following site: http://registrar.mcmaster.ca /CALEN...08/sec_181.htm
Do business students need to complete ECON 2X03 in first year in order to enter second year, but previously stated, "Students in Business I are not eligible to take upper Level Commerce course work"?

For Commerce II,are all of the 30 units listed in the following site required courses? So there is no room to choose electives?
http://registrar.mcmaster.ca /CALEN...08/sec_183.htm

When pursuing a minor, can students replace the required course in 2nd year, COMMERCE 2QA3, with ECON 2B03?

Can students only take third year courses such as FINANCIAL ACCOUNTING II during their fourth year in university?

How competitive is it to obtain a minor since I read somewhere a maximum 30 students are admitted each year? How does the Undergraduate Admissions Policy and Reviewing Committee decide who gets admitted or not?

I hope you can help me by answering these questions! Thanks!

I am not in commerce so I can't answer your faculty specific ones, but I have a handle on the rest of them.

Although it's good you're looking ahead into second year, you're getting too far ahead of yourself. What happens if you hate your courses, or do really poorly in one area? You're going to need to rethink your plans.

Also, not all courses are offered every year, and you're not going to always be able to get into the courses you want when you want.

Course requirements change every year, depending on when the course is taught (day vs. evening, regular year vs. summer school), by who, and what texts you need. If different sections have different professors, and they are occuring during the same term, they can also differ.

Economics is part of the faculty of Social Sciences, and thus not a part of the school of buisness.

If you have to take Econ 2X03 as part of your first year degree requirements that means you can take second year classes in first year.

However, as a rule (ie it is not part of your degree) I would try and avoid this. I took a second year poli sci class in my first year and was slightly overwhelmed.

McMaster's CA is based on a 12 point scale. a 5.0 is equivalent to a C, or 64-66%.

When in second or third year you can take courses for first, second and third year. In fourth year you can take courses from any year.

You are not accepted into a minor. A minor is something added to your degree upon graduation. In order to complete a minor you finish the components of it, and then you declare your minor on your graduation form. Otherwise it has no part of your degree.

If you have questions about your degree and are able to come to McMaster in July, I'd consider attending the Early Summer Orientation Program. You get advice from your faculty advisors on how to choose your courses, as well as attend other activities. More info: http://fye.mcmaster.ca/esop.html

If you can't attend, I would suggest contacting the School of Business and talking to an academic counsellor there.
