This is in theory more than in practice:
The SRA is tasked to uphold and update the bylaws and operating policies of the MSU while making decisions that influence the day-to-day activities of the MSU.
The MSU also owns two corporations: MSU Inc. and CFMU Inc.
MSU Inc. is where all the corporate activities of the MSU occurs, and the SRA are the voting membership of this body. Their year typically consists of approving the Operating Budget in April (prepared for the Corporation by the service managers and VP Finance), approving Capital allocations and purchases, from the MSU's Capital Reserve Fund, and approving other business items as they come up during the year.
Historically speaking, the SRA, the MSU's President and VPs have been the advocates for MSU students. This has included fighting for student rights, to representing the student bodies in lobbying the governments etc.
In the past few years, there has been a stagnation in the MSU's external activities. Mac has grown over 55% in population in the past 5 years, and as such the MSU's role has expanded in an unplanned method.
NOW. What I just said was all very positive. In truth, the MSU is run by a lot of students who are no more knowledgeable than you and me, and yet presume to make decisions involving our money that do not particularly benefit anyone.
