I would suggest commuting for off-campus housing. I think you being so adamant about being in a dorm and not finalizing a decision is not very wise. I lived on campus for 2 years, but merely for convenience. If you are worried about making friends and stuff - you'll for sure meet people through your program and through welcome week and clubs as well. I think you should just give up on residence and start planning alternative options, because school starts in a week

It's quite late now to be looking at trying to get into residence for the Fall term.

But you can always find a room that may be available in a student house close to campus. Some groups of students are still looking for 1-2 people to join them in their house:
