John McIntyre for SRA Science
Hey Everyone!
I will be running again in the SRA election on March 10th and 11th and want you to come out and vote! As I am running for SRA Science, you will only be able to vote for me if you are in Science, but regardless what faculty you are in go out and vote on the 10th/11th. I will post the locations once they are all finalized.
Many of you will recognize me from the odd MacInsiders post. I am also the Senior Teaching Assistant for First Year Psychology, and was in this year's Welcome Week production of IRIS. I have been an SRA member for two years, and significant involved in different MSU services including Horizons, SWHAT, Elections, and many more!
Because of my large interest in the services that we provide to students, I have focussed my SRA efforts on our services. This is a focus that I will continue into next year if elected. I think it's great that we have so many people running on the platform of visibility this year, but that needs to be supported by tangible accomplishments in order to have something to be visible about! I won't present all of my ideas on there, because there are WAY too many and many are in development, but I will discuss a few key points:
As Services Committee Commissioner this year we have undertaken the large task of an internal review of our non-business unit services (aka the non profit seeking ones like SWHAT, EFRT, SHEC, etc.). This has included a review of the operating policies as well as personnel structures of our services to ensure their relevance and efficiencies. Because this was a large job, I would like to continue next year with our business units. We began with the non-business units because in a lot of ways those are the most relevant to students, but our business units are also extremely relevant and so we want to make sure we give them adequate consideration next year.
I am currently working with the Silhouette and campus partners to try and find a solution for the current arrangement. Right now the Silhouette is an MSU Service, which means they are funded by the MSU and ultimately the MSU is liable for anything done by The Silhouette. However, there are calls from many people for the MSU to be less involved in the governance of The Sil and it's hiring committees. This has created some interesting issues and we are trying to work to a mutually agreeable solution that benefits both parties, but most importantly students.
My other main plan is to try and work to make the SRA more engaged/relevant. This past year has been one of the best in the last 5 years for SRA engagement, and we need to build off of that. I believe this starts in the summer at our trainings. I have been working with the current VP Administration, Andrew Richardson, as well as a few other SRA members to influence the training priorities for next year to ensure that we start the year strong. This allows us to come in ready to go in September rather than having things really only start second term.
There are just a few of my ideas I plan to pursue. I want to make our services even better than they already are and make sure students are aware of them not even to use them but to actively participate in them! If you have any questions or want to probe any of these priorities or anything don't hesitate. Just make sure no matter what to vote March 10th and 11th!
Cheers,
John
