Looking for Athletes for Research!
Hello Everyone! I am helping recruit athletes for a research study study here at McMaster!

Purpose: To determine the effects of training status and bloodflow on muscle
stem cells

Requires that you are:

- Male between the ages of 18-30
- Healthy, non-smoker

and you are:

- Resistance trained (>2 x per week for 2 years)
or
- Endurance trained (>4 x per week for 2 years)
or
- Sedentary individuals

As a participant you will undergo:

- Acute bout of eccentric exercise
- Muscle biopsies
- Blood draw

The compensation is $250.

Here is some more information:
The study is looking at the relationship between muscle capillarization (and therefore blood flow) and muscle regeneration (looking at muscle stem cells). We’ll be looking at fiber type distribution, capillary density and muscle stem cells. The study is recruiting endurance athletes (i.e., spin class, trained runners, varsity athletes) and also sedentary people. The study will involve some pre-testing (a VO2 max test, and a maximal leg strength test) and a blood draw (very small, approximately 50mL vs. average blood donation is 450mL) and muscle biopsy. Following that (the next day), the participant would be performing heavy leg exercise (to induce muscle regeneration, approximately 30 min), and biopsies and blood draws (same as pre-)will be taken from the exercised leg at 6h, 24h, and 72h following the leg reps. Each biopsy session is approximately 30 min.

Just to put the biopsies in perspective for the athletes, you can practice the next day following 4 biopsies (single leg) in a day. Feels a bit like a Charlie horse.
