Edit: I dunno if it's just me, but I don't think the "Happening Today" section works.... every time I click a link, it just tells me that there are no events to display and doesn't give me any details about the events. o_O
Edit 2: ^ That only happens on the front page. I can click "see all events" then click them on the calendar, but it's a dead link from the front page.
It's not just you. Those are actual events, not sure why there aren't clickable, though.

Chad, it really confuses me that you think that having a dislike button would foster negativity, yet you seen keen on having badges/titles/whatnot for how many times you've been liked.
Wouldn't this encourage people to post what they THINK other people want to hear?
I dunno, I'd personally rather somone share their true views than hide on the internet and try to get e-fame.
The like button and the 'badges' idea doesn't necessarily mean people will not give their honest 'true' opinion of things. Users could, and have, posted their own opinion which is the opposite of the original poster and backed their critique/opinion up and others have 'liked' their post showing they support their side.
Would you find it more fair to have the badges based on how many 'thanks' the user gets? Thanks are more for when users have helped other users either by answering a question or providing useful information. The point to the badges would give more incentive for users to post helpful useful information and help other members out who have posted questions, etc.
As for the 'disagree' button, the idea hasn't been dismissed entirely.. it's up to you... the community, to decide whether it should be implemented or not. I'm used to using sites like Digg and Facebook which only have a 'like' or 'digg up' button and not a 'dislike' button and if you dislike it, you just don't press the 'like' button. But I can definitely see merit in your point about people maybe disagreeing with something said but not wanting to have to type out a response with their counter opinion.
Instead of having 'like' and 'dislike' buttons I have been looking for a mod that would allow the 'thumbs up' and 'thumbs down' option similar to digg and have posts actually 'collapse' which are 'dugg down' enough. While I find that really useful on the comments on sites like digg or youtube, we've enforced being an 'inclusive' community here and some people may become offended if their opinion post gets 'thumbed down' a lot without users posting explanations, thumbed down enough to be collapsed completely and 'dismissed', or if the system is abused and people thumb down a valid point (which happens a lot on digg's comments).
Then again, it's up to the community what you all want! So voice your opinions and we'll put it to a vote if a disagree/thumbs system is something that is desired and we'll try implement it!

Yea, maybe "thanks" would be more useful than the like.
I know personally if I even just find something funny, I tend to like it...I'm sure there are other people who do the same.
I find the "like" feature to be one of the more relaxed features about the site... as opposed to the thanks button, which is more formal. You know, since this is a helping community.
This isn't coming out right, I don't think.
Basically: people tend to "abuse" the like button. But most people don't thank random shit. XD

- Happening Today events now link properly to their event info via the calendar
- Current online users box removed for guest users
- Added Valentines countdown
Not sure what you mean by detailed... why would you need to go more detailed than the date it was posted? You are looking for a breakdown by the minute? It may be server intensive, I'd need to look into it. Though I'm still trying to see the reason for needing detailed posting times. Please elaborate?
I'm suggesting the headings of posts say something like
"Feb 10th, 2010, 12:29:42 PM"
instead of the way they're currently displayed, using
"3 Days Ago".
Or alternatively, for people who don't want to do the math, maybe even
"3 Days Ago, on Feb 10th, 2010, 12:29:42 PM"
but that seems a little redundant. I just prefer them because they make it easier to compare your posts to those of other topics, and what's the harm? I've never run a forum before, but I can't imagine them being that server-intensive. There isn't really a heavy need, but they can come in handy. I also noticed my post seems to use HTML editing instead of BBCode. Did something change behind the scenes, or is that just me?
Thanks for the suggestion, the 'x days ago' only shows up for posts that are fresh and recent, then it reverts back to the standard month day year format. No time of the posting though, will look into adding it
Hi Entropy, the format has been changed to show the time now. It will show the post as coming from 'today' or 'yesterday' or the date, and then have the time it was posted.
Oh, also... I dunno how popular this would be, but here goes:
I like getting emails saying people have replied to a thread... but is there a way to make it so you only get the emails like, 5-10 posts after your post? And then any more posts after that, you don't receive them? And if you post again, the same thing happens?
Does unsubscribing make it so that if you post in the thread again, you don't get the email notifications? I've never tried it.
It's just that for some threads, I still get email notificatiosn like 30 posts after mine, or like a week and a half after I posted. D:

For those who use gmail to receive their messages, filter messages with "macinsiders" in the subject line and immediately archive them. Then your inbox doesn't get clogged and you can easily delete emails you're not interested in.

you can set it up to only send you notifications once per day, and then all the posts from that day are in one e-mail

Ya, in your subscription settings you can subscribe to get a daily email with updates to the thread you subscribed to. Then when you unsubscribe you will not get any new emails (even if you reply again). Unfortunately there is no way to make it so it only sends you a few notifications and then automatically unsubscribes you... you'd have to do it manually once you get the answer to your question/post and don't want to be notified anymore.
