New Course - blends history/sociology/health studies
Hi everyone,

Just wanted to let you know that a new course is being offered this coming summer in Health, Aging, and Society called Critical Perspectives of the Pharmaceutical Age. It draws on history, sociology, anthropology, and health studies material.

Put briefly, the course examines the role of pharmaceuticals in modern life. Some of the questions we'll address: do pharmaceutical companies have too much influence in academia? Are some governments preventing their population from getting medication? How did aspirin change the world? And most importantly, why is Pele trying to sell me viagra?

I make no legally binding promises but can absolutely guarantee that this will be the most action-packed, death-defying, hard-hitting, and eyebrow-raising course I'll be teaching all summer...possibly with the exception of HLTH AGE 2G03E Mental Health.

Sign up for HLTH AGE 3Q03E!

Any questions? Email me: [email protected] x.ac.uk (watch the one "t"!)

This sounds exciting...I'm not sure if you'll check back here (if not, I'll email you), but I had a couple questions:

- Are there any pre-requisites? Is the course friendly to non-specialists?
- Are students able to audit the course? (I'm a grad student and can't officially enroll, but I'd want to sit in on it since I'll be around campus at that time anyway)

Good news!
Hi everyone,

To answer a few questions:

1) the course is EXTREMELY friendly to non-specialists. As far as I can tell, there are no real specialists for this sort of thing. Only qualities you need are a willingness to enjoy yourself and learn.

2) My email is fishy. It is indeed registered in the UK - that's because I'm a globe-spanning, time-travelling, man of many talents. Also, I spend most of the year in Oxford.

3) I've rethought my previous post and can now assure you that there will be no competition from HLTH AGE 2G03 - this is indeed the superior course.

If this sounds good to you, hurry up and register!

Ahh I wish I could take it, I took mental health a few summer's ago and loved it. But alas, I will be doing my social work practicum :(

Offered for one time only!
For those wondering if this will be offered during the year - it's pretty unlikely as I normally only teach at Mac over the summers. I'd be happy to offer it during the year but I don't think that's likely to happen. In other words...it may be now or never!

I was registered in 2G03 for a bit last summer. Seemed like a really fascinating course before I had to drop it
