Students Give Generously to Community, to Charity and to Victims of Haitian Quake
From the MSU News site:
The generosity of McMaster students was overwhelming in 2009/2010. On the heels of a $3000 donation to Joy and Hope Haiti, in partnership with Hospitality Services, the McMaster Students Union (MSU) brought total student charitable contributions to well over $150,000 in the last academic year.In February, the MSU donated $5,000 to the Red Cross in support of Haitian reconstruction.
However, the the Haiti tragedy only crystallized an already generous spirit that existed on campus long before the quake. Several MSU services, including the Fundraising Initiative Team (FIT), Campus Events and MSU Clubs have combined to raise very significant charity money.“Student giving has been tremendous this year,” said Mary Koziol, president of the MSU.
“McMaster students clearly feel an obligation to act as responsible citizens of the global community. We are very fortunate to attend this institution and I think many students see giving-back and supporting charity as an essential characteristic of student life.”Student giving began in the summer months with the MSU’s annual charity golf tournament - The McMasters, raising a modest $3,000 for early childhood education in Hamilton. By the end of September, McMaster students, through the annual Shinerama campaign, raised an astonishing $61,000 to help fight cystic fibrosis. The Terry Fox Run is a mainstay at McMaster, this year undergrads pledged nearly $3,000 to the 2009/2010 run.Early each new year, through the Campus Events department, the MSU hosts an annual charity formal.
Always a sellout, Charity Ball ’10 focused on the McMaster Children’s Hospital and Big Brothers Big Sisters (Hamilton & Burlington), generating more than $26,000 in donation money.By March, student clubs had made their mark and generated thousands for various groups within the community.
A charity dodgeball tournament, co-sponsored by MSU Clubs and the Athletics and Recreation Dept. of McMaster University, procured more than $1,100 for Camp Trillium, a summer camp providing recreation and emotional support for children with cancer and their families. Moreover, student clubs such as Mac Cares and Relay for Life secured tens of thousands in charitable contributions this year. Mac Cares raised nearly $10,000 in support of MacWheelers, McMaster University’s spinal cord rehabilitation centre, while Relay for Life McMaster cultivated an astonishing $54,000 to help support the Canadian Cancer Society.
