Switching from Engineering I to Life Sci
Hey, so I'm a first year engineering student interested in going into Life Sci I. I got accepted into Life Science at Mac in high school, but decided that it was not for me at the time, so I accepted my Engineering offer. Unfortunately, I'm starting to think Engineering isn't for me and have started to wonder if I could still switch into Life Science I for next semester? I'm not sure if any of my courses besides my Econ elective will cross over, and I'm wondering if there is anyone who knows how this process of switching faculties would work? Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

as long as you make the grade you can switch faculties. (for most faculties)
go see an academic advisor ASAP
you want to be able to take the right courses so you don't repeat year 1 in sep 2010.
also, make sure the switch is what you really want to do.

Like the others have said above, go talk with Sally Williams. She's really nice and will talk to you about all your options and basically ease your mind lol. Definitly talk to her asap!

Okay, I'll talk to her tomorrow asap. Hopefully my chem, math, and physics will cross over, so I'd only have to catch up a little. Does anyone recommend contacting the Science faculty's undergraduate student advisor before I go to Sally Williams?

Chemistry should cross over, since the 1A03 and 1E03 courses are very similar. I'm not so sure about math. Some of the stuff taught in the 1Z04 course is taught in 1AA3 (McLaurin and Taylor series), while some concepts from 1A03 is taught in 1ZZ5 (lots of integration).
As for physics, I'm not sure if the 1B03 course is similar to the Engineering physics course, since I haven't taken 1B03 yet. However, unlike Math 1A03 and Chem 1A03, Physics 1B03 isoffered next semester as well.

Good luck. I hope it all goes well. I just hope they're nice enough to let you transfer some of the courses so that you don't have to start all over. I personally despise the associate dean's office for a number of reasons that I won't mention here. I haven't had a good experience with them last year...

For those courses that do not overlap... they might count as electives?

More courses than you might think will switch over, I know this because I have a friend who did the opposite, and used Life Sci courses for engineering.
-Math 1Z04 will count towards your calculus requirment
-Chem 1E03 is the same as Chem 1A03
-Physics 1D03 will count towards your physics requirement (if applicable)
-The other courses would be electives
You would have to make up your Biology courses next Semester, as well as the Chem 1AA3, and another Math or Stats. I believe that you need 8/10 courses to be in the Sciences, so if you took all Science courses next term than you would probably be fine.

I would suggest going to Sally Williams first. She will be able to answer most, if not all, of your questions. If you are still a little unsure/have more questions after that, you can definitely talk to the Science Faculty. Hope that helps.

Any courses that you have left to take that are not offered in 2nd term (Bio 1A03, Psych 1X03 etc) you can most likely take in summer school instead of in Sept 2010.

For anyone else who is interested in switching, this is what Sally told me:
Chem 1E03 is equivalent to Chem 1A03
MATLS 1M03 is equivalent to any course on the Life Science List
Math 1ZZ5 is equivalent to Math 1AA3 or Math 1B03
Math 1Z04 is equivalent to Math 1A03
Physics 1D03 is equivalent to Physics 1B03
Physics 1E03 is equivalent to Physics 1BB3
Engineering 1C03 (Design) would be considered an elective.
Enegineering 1D04 (programming) is equivalent to Computer Science.
Engineering 1P03 would be considered an elective.
I`d have to take Bio 1A03 (with permission) and Bio 1M03 next semester, and will have to continue taking my engineering courses, along with taking Pysch 1X03 and 1XX3 online over the summer. Both my econ electives will cross over as well, so then next year I would have a slightly smaller course-load.
Thanks again for all the help guys!

Have you considered physical sci? It's another decent alternative. Saves you from taking psych .
