Transfer from humanities to engineering
Hi guys,
I am in first year humanities, but I find the workload to be too heavy. I took math and econ this year and I liked them and found easy, so I am planning to switch into engineering as it is more math related. I want to know if math and econ is a good indicator of engineering workload. And should I apply through OUAC as I will have to apply for 1st year.
Thanks

Workload is even more, not sure which econ and math you took but 1st year eng math was not a bird course for math. Engineering is a degree only take if you can work well under pressure and stress, tight deadlines and how you manage your time. Make sure to look into your interests in coding and physics.

I don't want to sound discouraging but if you found humanities to be a heavy workload, then engineering is definitely not for you. Undergraduate engineering has the heaviest workload from all undergraduate programs.

This is all perspective. Humanities can have a very heavy workload, if the student is a hard worker. And Engineering can have a very light workload, if the student is a slacker. Someone may be able to complete 3 hours of math homework in an hour, but it would take them 5 hours to write an essay that should only take an hour (for example).
I don't think there's any rule that says Eng has the heaviest workload. It depends on the student, how hard they work and what courses they are good at.
To the OP: I don't think you'll have to reapply through OUAC, it will just be through McMaster. If it's the math course you enjoyed, you could also transfer into Commerce or Economics. I would talk to an academic advisor. You might be able to skip out on one or two first year Eng classes if you took them while in Humanities.

This can be approached from various points of view. However, if you take for example timetable hours, for someone who is in engineering taking 5 courses they can expect between 25-30 hours per week (lectures + labs). I highly doubt that someone in the humanities will have anything over 20 hours. There's is also no lab prep and no lab write ups. I speak from experience having taken a variety of courses from english and sociology to advanced engineering courses. I generally found the social science courses easy (and much less work) compared to my core engineering courses.

The OP has to have the pre-reqs from high school, too, though. You can't get in if you did all English and History classes in grade 12.

Not only that, but first year engineers can expect 6 or 7 courses per term.
There is an awful lot of work to do in engineering and time management is very key. First year was definitely one of the biggest challenges I've ever had in my life. Along with very obscure math classes throughout all of your years, you'll also be taking many different classes in physics, electronics, coding... there's a lot of weird stuff you never end up using again
If you liked math and econ, I would suggest perhaps looking into commerce, as was previously mentioned, or even math&stats.
