It's not that insightful/profound when it comes to apocalypse or zombie scenarios, but keep in mind it was a really rad idea to adapt it from the comics, then it had to be palatable to millions of viewers. Whenever you cater a series to a particular audience when it was originally designed for another, you're gonna have a shitty time. The comics themselves are really diverse and action oriented, while slowly feeding you character development in every few panels -- the unfortunate thing about serial dramas is you have 42 minutes to indroduce the episode, get all the elements in, then get the hell out of the episode. Comics typically have an assumed knowledge and can come in quite suddenly because the content will be digested over a longer period of time, and you can go back and read the script repeatedly and take in all the visuals, where the same stuff must be seen as-it-happens for TV.
tldr: a brilliant comic for one audience, forceably cateredto the millions of american zombies/mainstream
