Not a surprise since it's already a crappy university on top of having gone on strike. I've never heard of anyone who's gone to York and been happy about it.

This definitely looks bad for York, especially since admissions is increasing at other universities. Every year more and more students apply to universities.
I applied to York twice and was accepted both times, last year and the year before that. Two years ago around the time I applied York was in the media a lot for violence on campus, there were repeated incidents of abuse, or something like that. And then last year there was the strike. This really hurts their reputation.

Almost 66 000 students accepted offers for first year programs (in Ontario)? No wonder undergrad degrees aren't worth anything! *bitter*

Haha, they sent me an e-mail a couple weeks ago asking if I wanted to switch to their university - and that they would fast-track my application since I already applied. I'm not sure if that's something they do every year, but it gave me a laugh. :]

I know when I applied to York several years ago they were hounding me into September to ask me to go there. They were the first place I declined...so sometime in March/April.

Touche. But even if 60 000 did that's a LOT of people!

I don't see why the strike would cause less people to go. It's over now, unless the contract is only good for another 3 years or something like that. Chances are another university's contract would be ended sooner than York's and that means a possibility for a strike.
The safety is another problem and this should be the only problem involving the lack of student acceptances.

Well it's normal for any institution to have a strike obviously, and while that shouldn't cause for people to not want to go to said institution anymore, it was the way that York handled the students - i.e. not paying them back in full. I get that it's hard times, but man, think about the international students, and even national students who paid soo much money at the beginning of the year, having it go to waste for several months.
I believe they only got like, 12% back.
