118 Locke St. N. RENTERS BE AWARE
Description:
The owners of this house rent it out as live in landpeople. Seemingly sweet and helpful, once you sign a lease you'll find out the following:

1) They smoke inside. Multiple times a day. If you have allergies or cigarette smoke sensitivities be prepared to live in a smoking home. Do not let the "clean and tidy, everything in its place" appearance fool you. Also, Mary Bik (one landperson) plays it off as if its the renters fault if they have an issue with the smoking because its 'her house'.

2) I was wrongfully evicted (no written notice and given less than 60 days to "get out") because "this boyfriend shit has got to stop". I am and adult renting a room yes and therefore since there were no conditions about visitors in the lease my partner would stay over 2-4 nights/week. As you would in an exciting new relationship. She invited me into the living room, sat me down and started to scold me about how "my behaviour" was unacceptable; "I mean you two were having dinner AND wine. The alcohol, I just didn't like the whole scene!". As she sits and smokes with a glass of wine in the living room.

3) She is a retired psych nurse so be prepared to be judged and labelled

4) Her husband, Dave, is extremely homophobic to the point where he circled a newly married same sex couple in the paper, handed it to me with a look of disgust and said: "well, what do you think of that?"

5) Dave threatened to call the cops on me for "trespassing" because I had my partner over. In my room. A room that I was paying rent for as a tenet.

What I'm trying to say is: if those are the rules and expectations of their tenets and they expect people paying rent to not have social lives, stay quietly in their room except to cook food (at a time that works around their schedule), live in a smoke filled house without agreeing to it and having to agree to racist, homophobic and stigmatizing comments or else risking being labeled "deviant" then they should write that into the lease. Mary and Dave are going to continue to have issues with tenets until they realize that owning a house does not mean you control how another person lives their life. Enough said, rent are your own risk. She is also listed on facebook, mac student rentals, kijiji and probably somewhere else.

Imperious, Watoko all say thanks to zubrissa for this post.

Thanks for sharing your experience here and warning others.

The smoking would bother me the most because of the health concerns.

If there isn't anything in the lease about guests staying over, then you are completely within your rights to have people over.

I would go and set up an appointment with the Off Campus Resource Centre (OCRC), their office is located on the Lower Level of the Student Centre, room B112. Give them a call at (905) 525-9140 ext. 24086, email them at [email protected] .ca, or simply walk in Monday – Friday, 9:00 – 4:00 (closed for lunch 12:00 – 1:00).

They can help let you know what your methods of recourse are and next actions you should take.
