Air Quality Meeting (May 20 2010) Recap

From the Hamilton Good Neighbour Campaign:

Thank you to everyone who made it out this past Thursday! It was great to see a good show of community support for the issue and hear the fantastic questions that were asked to the Ministry. If you weren't able to make the meeting, hopefully you got to catch some of the great coverage that was done by CH News.

The campaign initiated a presentation at 7pm because we felt that it was necessary in order to fully discuss the issue (we were not satisfied with the Ministry's choice to have an open house style event). At this time, we brought in about half the postcards (which represent the many voices of our community) and placed them in front of the Ministry's displays forming a semi-circle. This picture shows a portion of the circle. People and displays were scattered around the room and our display was set up outside the building (since we were asked by the Ministry to take it outside).

Next Steps:

Before the proposed standard (which was discussed at the meeting) can be granted, the Environmental Bill of Rights states that the public must be allowed to submit comments. The comments must be reviewed by the Ministry and taken into consideration before the final decision is made. Thus, this will be our last opportunity to have a say in the process before the standard is finalized and granted. Everyone and anyone is invited to make a comments on the proposed documents and we encourage everyone to do so!

There is no specific format that the comments need to take. Stating why you are/are not in favour of the standard is what is needed.

PLEASE NOTE: If you would like help making comments or have any questions on the process, please let us know! We are willing to work with anyone to ensure their voices get heard.

COMMENTING ON THE ENVIRONMENTAL BILL OF RIGHTS

What is the Environmental Bill of Rights?

The EBR gives every citizen of Ontario the right to participate in environmental decision-making.

What is the Environmental Registry?

The Environmental Registry is an important component of the EBR which provides the information you need to participate in environmentally significant government decision-making. The Environmental Registry is a computerized "bulletin board" system that contains general information on the EBR, each ministry's Statement of Environmental Values, and ministry proposals and decisions for environmentally significant policies, acts, regulations and instruments.

You have the right to comment on any proposal and ministries must consider your comments.

The below notices and copies of the proposed Alteration of Standard Approval documents and Director’s Order for AM Dofasco Inc. have been posted to the Environmental Registry (http://www.ebr.gov.on.ca/) for review and comment.

The comment period closes on June 5, 2010.

• 010-9926 – Proposed Director’s Order

• 010-9925 – s.35(1) Approval and s.35(14) Order
