Apple gains temporary ban in US against Samsung Nexuses
I find it really dumb that Apple is suing for something like slide to screen unlock and another i think is the pattern with the 9 dots. How does one monopolize something like this. Sure it is their idea but it's like saying I created a phone by punching in numbers therefore no other phone can punch in numbers.

It hasn't been Samsung's best week. Just days after Judge Lucy Koh granted a preliminary ban on sales of the Galaxy Tab 10.1, she's following it up with a similar granted request on the Galaxy Nexus. Judge Koh had already signaled that she thought Apple's lawsuit over four patents might have merit, but it's only now that she's deciding the potential damage is worth halting sales of the phone until there's a final trial verdict. Samsung will no doubt try to appeal the dispute, which centers on Android 4.0's slide-to-unlock mechanism (among other elements), but there's a lot more urgency here than with the outgoing Tab 10.1: the Galaxy Nexus is still a current-generation device, and just became Google's Android 4.1 phone flagship. Samsung's odds aren't great given that Apple has already used one of the patents to give HTC grief with its imports.
Update: As patent lawsuit guru Florian Mueller found, the clincher for the ban was the patent on unified search that's linked to Siri. Although Judge Koh is inclined to believe Apple's view regarding all four patents, that search patent is the one whose violation would reportedly merit more than a slap on the wrist. She's similarly convinced that Apple's patents are legitimate and likely won't be dismissed anytime soon.

That's the annoying thing about patents. Depending on the wording of the patent, and how they can skillfully write it to be very general but also very specific, they can sue for pretty much anything.

If ya read the update it is not a general patent. Unified Search isn't small thing, not to mention it is much more than just the interface. People read these articles and automatically start hating without understanding.

Yes Apple has had a few bogus suits filed but they have been thrown out. Some of these are actually legitimate.

How do they always end up in stupid lawsuits? :/

Just last year, they sued samsung for copying "the look and feel" of the ipad and iphone.

Unified search is hardly ground breaking. Essentially its used in their SIRI software to allow the combined search of
1) The device (no context on device)
2) The internet
3) Specific Contract based algorithms/databases such as wolfram.

all within a single search. Also lets be clear: this isnt apple vs samsung. Its apple vs google. This specific patent is every single ICS device as well as several gingerbread devices. In the past a company would sue for the patent royalties of such a broad patent. Now, with this pathetic series of lawsuits that apple has started products are being banned from entire markets...

One last point: Apple has had almost zero success in the US of banning other products. However with this ONE judge it has now had two products (tab and phone) temporarily banned from the US until as proper trial can be scheduled.

Well, have you ever compared a Galaxy S to an iPhone 3G/3GS? The hardware looks pretty similar, and the packaging and accessories are ridiculously similar as well.

have you seen 2 different sedans?

they both have wheels, a steering wheels, mirrors, doors etc

lets not beat around the bush, jobs was pissed at google/shmidt for "copying" the iphone, and how he wanted to destroy google by going "thermonuclear". this patent war is all about controlling the future, hence you see google buying motorola for its patent portfolio and essentially keeping it at an arms length

things like slide to unlock and these retarded prior art patents just skirt around the issue, apple and the other android OEMs want to use every means neccessary to discourage competition

Well, on another note, Google is trying to have xbox sales banned in the USA. Meanwhile, it's the consumers who will suffer from all of this patent-court-warfare.
