It's pure memorization.
Prof. Davies is a really sweet guy, but he's not a very organized prof IMO. Lectures consist of image slideshows which he speaks about in detail with the expectation that the students are writing down what he is saying. However, it's never made clear what's important and what isn't.
The textbook is large because it's used for both the first Art History courses and costs. I think $150 or so. It's an informative book.
The final exam is a lot of writing. Your TA will go over details in tutorial.
And speaking of, I recommend going to tutorial. The TA goes into detail about certain techniques and expands on something Dr. Davies may have mentioned in class. Sometimes he even passes down information to the TA's that you wouldn't have found out otherwise.
I recommend taking the course if you genuinely have an interest in art, both the history behind it and its various mediums. If not, stay away.
