Assignments for Physics 1B03 and 1BA3
I'm interested in taking these two courses but I'm not very happy with the textbook they use -- Physics for Scientists and Engineers by RD Knight. So, I want to know if homework is assigned from the textbook because if not, I can buy a better book.

no its not but i recommend you read the book especially for 1ba3. assignments are labs, capa, and little worksheets you hand in for 1b03. same for 1ba3 except no worksheets iirc. i havent taken 1ba3 but my friends in it always complained about labs (long and dumb they say) and capa (rape they say). 1b03 capa is alright, labs are easy most of the time. hughes' iclicker was hard even if u did the reading for 1b03 first term. and arent you just starting first year in september? already have an opinion on the book eh?

Yeah. I looked up the book on Amazon and it isn't nearly as popular as Young and Freedman.

Edit: Why do you recommend this book in particular?

knight's textbook is considered one of the best 1st year textbooks...... but w/e. You could get away with another one if you wish.

That's not your opinion, that's other people's opinions

That book probably saved my ass more times than I can count, it most certainly was the best textbook in my first year
and a recommendation for 1ba3 (if you have hughes) take the time to memorize equations because she will NOT give them to you

Physics

I'am graduating in physics this year and I still call it the holy bible of physics. (really great reference when you can't remember one of the basic concepts). I plan to take it with me to to teahcer's college next year and maybe use it has a reference when i teach physics in the years to come.

SO there...

The best physics book for classical mechanics is "Mechanics" by Landau and Lifshitz, especially for math majors.

The textbook is useful for a lot of things, now that I think about it. From clearing up something you don't understand, which all textbooks in essence should do and this one does it well, to helping with capa questions; even more so in BA3. Hughes seems loves the knight textbook and honestly it should be in your best interest to use it. She's teaching it again this year so I would get comfortable with it and not listen to people on Amazon.

Knight is a fantastic book that still sits on my shelf, over 8 years after having taken the course.

If you agree with the statement "A picture is worth 1000 words" then you'll find that Knight >>> Young and Friedman.

Why? Does Knight's book have a lot of pictures?

Knight expressed many of the concepts very elegantly, with colourful, unambiguous diagrams.

Flipped to a page at random, and scanned it for you. You can download it (but only for the next 2 hours) here:

http://xps2pdf.co.uk/84a99cbf0a35889...ightsample.pdf

EDIT: Also bear in mind that this is more to show you the style of Knight's presentation. If you're unfamiliar with circuits, note that this is Chapter 32 (And the prior 31 chapters adequately prepare you), which is normally the introductory second year material (Physics 2B06).
