I have the Dell Inspiron 1525 that came out not too long ago. I've had no problems whatsoever with it. However, one of my friends has the exact one and she had problems. I don't know why really. Maybe I was lucky, but I still love my comp. I've had mine for over a year now and it's been great.

I have a XPS m1530 Dell, loved the laptop but it overheats, only the 07-08 ones though.

I have the Vostro 1510 (discontinued). It's pretty much a business laptop. Core 2 Duo, 2Gigs RAM, 2GHz. It runs very smoothly.
It's a business laptop so graphics aren't the best, but it stills runs games really fast compared to my friend's Sony and Toshiba.
I haven't had any problems in the 1 year I've had the laptop.

Doesn't it uses integrated graphics card? It will lag if you do any rendering.

Hmmm, is says:
"Mobile Intel(R) 965 Express Chipset Family"
Anyways, I've had no lags paying WCIII and many other MMORPGs.

I’ve had an XPS m1530 for about a year now and I have to say I love it. I did have mine upgraded with more memory and a faster processor, so it did cost a little more but it does run a lot faster (and quieter) then other XPS’.
I strongly advise against the Inspiron because my dad does work at Dell and he’s told me about all the crap that goes on with them. Frankly, if you have one that works properly you’re quite lucky.
On the otherhand, my brother has a Macbook pro and it’s a stunner, but being a Window’s gal, I personally find that their software took me too long to master. So, if you’re not technically inclined, don’t be taken over by a Mac’s flash.
On a side not, what’s the verdict on netbooks? I kinda wanna get one.

I might sound like an idiot who's stuck in the early 2000s, but what is a netbook?

I'm actually first year, so I don't know about around campus but I wouldn't say that the weight is too uncomfotable, ~4-5 lbs. I'd guess.

The XPS m1530 is a great laptop (have it myself). I picked it though only because of the bunch of reviews I was reading up on a year ago (notebookcheck was the final pusher). Before that, I would have bought a Toshiba Satellite. Only problems are the fact that sometimes, certain models have the heating issue as well as a bit noisy HDD.
Dell's customer service is alright, though nothing special. I've had one big fiasco with dell before that ended up on a huge misunderstanding and required a week of phonecalls, but that was on a purchased order, not a repair or anything of the sort (which I find to be adequate enough).
But the laptop; works like a beaut. I believe the m1530 isn't in production anymore. But the XPS Studio 16 is pretty much the successor to the m1530.

I would have to say the Dell Studio XPS 13... Great performance in a small body. Great for casaul gaming yet small enough to carry everywhere. Decent battery life but heating issue though :( but that's to be expected with most powerful ultraportables. Hybrid graphics, fast processor, great design and construction (for the later production ones, had some problems in the beginning which are fixed now)
Only major gripe: only 2 USB ports :(

I don't find the 12" that small. It feels only a bit smaller than the 13.3"...
Some people get used to screen sizes of 8.9" (one of the smallest I think), others just don't use it as a primary computer, and yet others use a cable to connect to a giant monitor. I see people do that in computer labs/libraries across campus a lot.
