i bought binders but never really used them, notebooks worked better- a)they are easier to carry around and b)its not like high school where you have a bunch of handouts and stuff, mostly the only handout you get is the course syllabus, but if you want binders to hold slides and essays id go 1 or 1.5

It depends on the person...I've never been a binder person, and that didn't change in university. I prefer folders.

As a side note, if you want to go into social psych, you should take soc psy 1Z03 to see if you like the field before you major in it. If you're entering first year, then you're just in soc sci, you're not in social psych yet.

Some people like doing one notebook for each subject or a multisubject notebook. I prefer using a general 3 ringed binder with lined paper and putting all my slides/papers there. I think it's only 1-1.5 inch o_o. Don't get those clunky Mead 5 star 2-2.5 inch binders >>

I usually have 1.5 inch binders, but I bring lined paper on a clipboard to class because its much easier to carry and its less clunky! I transfer my notes to my binders usually after a week or two.

I would always suggest typing. OneNote is basically the only Microsoft program I use, and it is definitely worth it. However, if you are deadset on writing, get a notebook. That way it is easier to ensure that you do not lose your notes.

I never used binders. I bought plastic filing boxes and put in hanging dividers. That way I never had to worry about the paper tearing or lugging the whole thing around.

The biggest ...the BIGGEST tip I can ever share is ...Always date your pages

First year first term I bought all 1.5 inch binders and I found I didn't like using them because they were too big/bulky and by the end of the term I didn't even fill half of it.

Ever since I've been using 1 inch binders and I find they work pretty well. They are generally pretty full at the end of the term and are easy to carry around.

Bit of an add-on to the question: what about for first year life science students? I'm thinking about bringing a few 1-inch binders but I don't know if I'll ever actually use them. Any tips/advice would be appreciated, thank you!

^binders were a pure waste in first year life sci for me. i had a notebook for math. and every other class had online slides/notes which i would go over later. no point in having binders. i never saw anyone with em in res or class.

you might need some small ones though because some lab manuals (like physics 1b03) are just the pages with the holes and you have to put em in a binder yourself...you dont have to...you could bring the pages separately to labs but that is a pain imo.

handouts are so few and far between a binder doesn't make sense unless you fill them with stuff you make yourself. Everything is online as it is and if you want to take notes a notebook is generally superior

so true!!!
this should be first thing you do!

i used to do the binder thing for the 1st 2 years... lost alot of notes, esply in 2nd term last year. I'm thinkin of going back to note books for each class as i did in high skool. All you notes in one place and in chronological order

I didnt use binders for any classes. I just bring either notebooks, or loose paper. Its way easier to bring a pack of lined paper to class, take notes for each class, and when you get back home you put each note in seperate duotangs (if you're like me and want a blast from the past) or binders if thats what you prefer.
But you wont like bringing 3-5 binders to campus.

Also I can never bring myself to print out slides - its an awful amount of paper wasted if youprint every set of slides from every class. Ive only ever had about 6 courses with profs who posted slides. and I still couldnt even justify printing those! and its really sad to see people in class who print 1 or 2 slides per page :( I wouldve printed 6 per page.

Anyways, off topic sorry, that bothers me lol
