Dear Dr. Yang,
I am in the 3G03 class this semester and had a query/concern about one of the questions on the test.
The question was 'Which of the following statements is false"
I (as well as some of my peers that I discussed this matter with) feel that there were 2 options on this question that could pass as the right answer
due to the vague nature of the responses.
The first option is 'Water molecules move from high concentration regions to low concentration regions via osmosis". This statement is false if the "concentration"
was regarded as solute concentrations. Osmosis is the movement of water from a region that has low salt concentration to one where the salt concentration is high.
Hence, due to the unspecific wording of the option, I feel it should be accepted.
The second option is "if a negatively charged nitrogen is placed next to a C-H bond....the hydrogen will be donated". This statement works both ways. If the negatively charged nitrogen
is placed next to the hydrogen in the C-H bond, the hydrogen will be donated due to polarity shifts. However, if the negatively charged nitrogen is adjacent to the carbon (like in the textbook),
then the hydrogen cannot be donated. I feel that the position of the nitrogen will determine what happens in the occurrence of the hydrogen bond.
Thus I hope you see why I feel that both answers CAN be accepted as being correct, depending on how the statements were interpreted. Neither interpretation is wrong, in my opinion, because
the options fail to be specific. This changes the validity of each statement.
Thank you very much for your consideration in this matter and I hope you see it fit to accept both as being correct.
Sincerely,
BLAH BLAH (privacy reasons)

Dear BLAH BLAH (privacy reasons)
Please check summary #6 on page 37. Yes you can argue that the subject of the statement is not clear, but I told the class to go through these statements and they were lifted from the text in verbatim!
The second option is from the answer (page SP-2) given to problem #2 (Chapter 2). I don't know when will nitrogen take on a negative charge when bonded to a C-H. With a prerequisite of organic chemistry and clear statements given in lectures that MC would be prepared from end-of-chapter's problem and summary, I think this question is very reasonable.
Please send email to my learnlink address in the future.
Regards
Dan

the questions from the end of the chapter were pretty much word for word the questions on this/previous tests (with slight changes in numbers)

Really? Wow. And here I was making notes and quizzing myself.
Looks like
-Summary
-End of Chapter questions
-Past tests
is the way to go.
