Deals on books can be found by talking to your welcome week reps. sooooooooo many of them will be selling books! There is no meaningful average for new books...some are $7.50 (like English short novels) and some can be several hundred dollars (I've heard some of the medrad ones are brutal). I think my most expensive one in first year was $160. Buying used from Titles won't save you that much--and most upper years knock $15-20 off whatever Titles is selling used for. Book lists won't be out til the end of Aug, and it'll be on the titles website

You should also check the MI marketplace, Facebook, e-bay, amazon, etc... You have the internet at your fingertips, use the resources it offers.

The new Physics textbook I needed was $140, but I refused to pay that much, so I bought an older edition off an upper year for $50, and having an older edition didnt hinder me in the course at all, and its a good way to save money.

I honestly only used my physics textbook to do questions, so I could have gotten off with buying an old version. But I didn't know that at the time, oh well.

Yea same, i couldve bought older versions for alot of things. I think its only a problem when the prof assigns specific questions for you to complete and hand in for marks, then you dont know exactly which ones hes asking for because your version is different, but i havnt had a class like that so far

I haven't had a class like that either. But I still wouldn't be able to tell if I would need the book or not. I'm not going to rely on what other people tell me either, because I'm not other people. If I feel like I need the book, in which most cases I do, then I buy the book. Better safe than sorry, this is my education after all.

I think buy a cheaper older edition is my last resort, the one that the prof chooses is obviously my first choice. But saving $90 on a Phys textbook is a bigdeal. I also ended up saving $65 on an alg textbook by buying it used from an upper year. And luckily I got my econ and math books free from a relative. Last year I only spent ~$350 on books and already got reimbursed $125 from selling some. I dont think ill be so lucky this year

That's basically how my first year was too. I barely spent anything on my textbooks. But second year I spent so much.

I would assume its because in 2nd year and higher, your stream gets more focused and maybe the books you use arnt as mass produced/mass circulated, and there arnt enough available for you to find a deal

No, it's still pretty general and I still bought them used but it was still really expensive.
