These are general fiction: The Shadow of the Wind, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time, The Kite Runner, Soulless

These are YA (a bit juvenile but still good): Going Bovine,
Looking for Alaska, Dash and Lily's Book of Dares

The Books of Pellinor by Alison Croggon.

Seconding The Hunger Games.

Anything by Shannon Hale, I suppose? Her writing is pretty amazing.

I find books based on historical people/events really interesting.. such as books about the Tudors, etc. Other than that, if you want girly - something borrowed, if you want fantasy, id read Graceling or the Lord of the Rings... its quite different from the movie.
Her fearful symmetry is also a really interesting and well written book by the same woman who wrote the time travelers wife. If you haven't read that, do it.
