What to bring to your student house

Well, although this may seem early for some people (or late for the super-organized people), now is a good time to start thinking about the things you need for your student house! Before you know it, summer will be over and you don’t want to be scrambling around trying to find your furniture and whatever else you may need. Although every house is different and may come with different things, here is a general list of things to bring with you to your student house:

Bedroom
Bed (including mattress & bedframe)
Linens
Desk
Garbage pail
Clothes hangers
Alarm Clark
Lamp
Hamper or Laundry bag

Kitchen
Cutlery (forks, knives, spoons)
Plates, bowls, glasses, mugs
Cooking utensils (pots & pans, oven trays, cutting board, can opener)
Garbage can
Cleaning Supplies (vacuum, broom, mop, air freshener, etc)

Washroom
Towels & Washcloths
Toiletries

Entertainment/Electronics
Telephone (most houses do not come with a landline so it is your choice whether to get one or not)
TV
Extension Cord
Power bar
Printer

Miscellaneous
Fan
Emergency Supplies (flashlight, first aid kit, etc)
Shoe Mat
Iron & Ironing Board
Laundry Supplies (detergent, bleach, iron, etc)
Telephone (most houses do not come with a landline so it is your choice whether to get one or not)
TV

Plus, anything else you feel is necessary!!
Remember, it is a good idea to measure your bedroom before purchasing large items to make sure there is room for everything.

If you’re looking to save some money on these items, some good places to look for some slighty used items are the Marketplace on Facebook (where alot of people also sell used textbooks). Alot of final year students use it to sell furniture and other things once they have graduated.

However, one of the easiest ways to save money is to talk with your housemates to split the costs of items that can be shared. Alot of department stores like Zellers, Walmart, etc will soon begin to have back-to-school sales on these items, so make sure you shop around so you can get the best deal!

It may seem stressful to purchase all these items, but just start early and take your time finding the best deal. Good luck!

P.S McMaster’s off-campus resource centre has alot of helpful information for students (ex. Sample floor plans) that are definitely worth taking a look at:

DOn't bring stuff you can buy down the street! Like cleaning supplies and stuff.
I would bring my clothes and furniture and buy everything in Hamilton when I need it. that way you save time and don't spend money on things you may not need !

I want to know what people here have done about their bed situation. My mom has said it would be too much hassle getting a whole bedframe, and so I think I just might be going with a mattress and box spring.

Beer.

(apparently "beer" is too short a message, so heres the lyrics to stairway to heaven)

There's a lady who's sure
All that glitters is gold
And she's buying a stairway to heaven
When she gets there she knows
If the stores are all closed
With a word she can get what she came for
oh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh
And she's buying a stairway to heaven
There's a sign on the wall
But she wants to be sure
'Cause you know sometimes words have
Two meanings
In a tree by the brook
There's a songbird who sings
Sometimes all of our thoughts are
Misgiven
Ooh, it makes me wonder
Ooh, it makes me wonder
There's a feeling I get
When I look to the west
And my spirit is crying
For leaving
In my thoughts I have seen
Rings of smoke through the trees
And the voices of those
Who stand looking
Ooh, it makes me wonder
Ooh, it really makes me wonder
And it's whispered that soon
If we all call the tune
Then the piper will lead us to reason
And a new day will dawn
For those who stand long
And the forests will
Echo with laughter
Oh, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, ooh, whoa, oh
If there's a bustle in your hedgerow
Don't be alarmed now
It's just a spring clean
For the May queen
Yes, there are two paths you can go by
But in the long run
There's still time to change
The road you're on
And it makes me wonder
Aw, uh, oh
Your head is humming and it won't go
In case you don't know
The piper's calling you to join him
Dear lady, can you hear the wind blow?
And did you know
Your stairway lies on the whispering wind?
(Solo)
And as we wind on down the road
Our shadows taller than our soul
There walks a lady we all know
Who shines white light and wants to show
How everything still turns to gold
And if you listen very hard
The truth will come to you at last
When all are one and one is all
To be a rock and not to roll
And she's buying a stairway
To heaven...

I somehow manage to always roll off of these.

I bought a lot of my furniture from the person who used to live in my room for a pretty good price since she didn't want to have to dismantle her bed frame and take it down the stairs etc.

We also convinced the landlord to buy the dining room table (a pretty nice hardwood one) off of the previous tenants and keep it as part of the house

Bringing a vacuum was invaluable to me, my landlord technically included one but it worked terribly. I tend to eat in my room a lot, and without a decent vacuum I would have probably had a major bug problem.

Bringing medication from home was another important one- for something that you don't use very regularly, like Gravol or Immodium, it doesn't make sense to buy a full pack when you need it. Taking a small amount from home is definitely a much cheaper solution.
