Can you fail CHEM 1AO3 and take it next semester?
If so, how would the mark be calculated? Would it be averaged?

I think your new mark would be taken, but you would have had to have dropped it before a certain point to show up on your record probably. I think the only thing that would still be redeemable of your old mark would be your labs, that is, if you still want those marks :p.

I'm pretty sure that if you fail and take it again it will be averaged, that's how it is in Eng anyways. I'm assuming you didn't drop it.

Chem 1A03 is not offered next semester however it should be offered in the summer. You can be exempted from the Labs if you received a certain mark in them (75% i believe)
This was taken from the course calender about failed courses. Both marks will be used for calculating the average.
Repetition of Courses: Students may repeat courses that have been failed or for which credit has been obtained a number of times, with the exception of the students in the Faculty of Business who may only repeat courses which they have failed. The grades for all attempts appear on the transcript and enter into the computation of the Cumulative Average. However, only one successful attempt will enter into the computation of credit earned towards your degree.

You can re-take any course again but you have to keep in mind that all of your grades go into your average. But the important thing is that if you don't have a high enough average, you might be restricted from second year courses you might be interested in.
You also need to make sure that this isn't a prerequisite for anything for next year. If it is, you can still take it in the summer but you wouldn't be able to take it next year unless you got a waiver.

i'm assuming you can't take chem 1A03 and chem 1AA3 together during the summer either (i'm saying this for the sake that most level II science programs require a full-year of chemsitry - both A03 and AA3).
if so, how could you enter a level II program like this?

you probably could take both in the summer.. the summer semester is divided up into two terms.. You could take one course over May-June and the other June-July.. (you have most of august off)

i'm glad to hear that.
but now i'm wondering, once i complete the two courses, would it be too late to apply for a level II science program (which req. both courses) by then?

so i just figured out another question.. haha
looking at level II prerequisites, it states that there is a minimum requirement of a grade of C+ for each of Chem 1A03 and 1AA3. Since only a completion mark is given at other universities, i'm guessing these two courses would have to be taken here at mac during the summer?
thanks in adv. again

in order to pass summer school you need to have 60+ or higher..
i dont think you would have to take the courses at mac if you have the permission letter.. from your faculty to do it at another university
