Canada finally abolishes the penny
http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2012-0...f-to-make.html
This was a long time coming imo. I wonder if the US will follow suit? I'm kind of surprised we did it first, actually.
Key points:
- starting fall of this year, production and distribution of pennies will cease
- total amount (post-tax) of any purchase will be rounded up or down to the nearest nickel
- You can still use your pennies, but you'll just need to use five at a time
Also, I stole this from Jeff Chan (who stole it from someone else).

Technically, I didn't steal it off her. She wrote about it in her status and I googled it to verify. >_>
But yes, this is lovely news!

No, you get 4.00. It's rounded to the nearest nickel, not always up or always down. Also, it only applies for cash transactions in the event you don't have pennies. If you're paying debit/credit, you get charged to the nearest cent. If you have pennies, you're allowed to use them (they won't become non-legal tender). They're just not making any more in the fall, and that's also when the whole rounding to the nearest nickel thing will start happening. They are, however, encouraging people to donate their pennies to charity. I have no idea if banks will be accepting pennies after this takes effect.

I'm pretty sure the prices will be changed so there would be no pennies needed, which means that your change would obviously be multiple of 5....

Although this is nice, I can't wait until they incorporate tax into listed price for items on the shelves...
So when you see a game for $60, you can safely take out three $20 and pay for it.
I've read up on the reasons why Canada and US use the subtotal system (different states/provinces having different tax % but still want to do country-wide advertising), but c'mon!

also aboriginals are exempt... so listing tax-included prices might cause a problem there as well

... And in the same budget, Canada abolishes the environment in favour of more money... We're real winners here in the north.

No, but that's funny. I was thinking of something like "Antiques Roadshow" or something like that. Just because of "Canada's last Year producing pennies" or something like that. Nothing too scientific.
