Chem 20B3 needed for Biochem 2bb3?
Hey, I'm going into second year Biochem and I registered to take chem 20B3 second semester but then, I needed to take Physics 1b03 so I didn't want to take both in second semester together so I thought I might be able to take chem 20b3 in the summer, but its a prereq for biochem 2bb3 so i wouldn't be able to take biochem 2bb3 without being registered in chem 20b3.
Is there no way to get around this or must I take chem 20b3 in second semester along with biochem 2bb3? has anyone else who did orgo in summer school ever had this problem?
Thanks

Not sure about summer school, but I took physics1B03 first sem of second year, and orgo20b3 and Biochem2BB3 in second sem of that year. It worked out fine. I would say that if it's a prereq than there's probably no way around it since, the material as i remember it did overlap somewhat in those two courses (i.e Amino acid/Protein chemistry). I remember everyone in that class had 2bb3 right before orgo lol, and there would always be a rush of students late to orgo, the prof was like 'Oh you biochem kids'

Heh. That's not going to happen this year.

We have Orgo on days we don't have Biochem 2BB3, except for Fridays, when we have an hour in between.

No, there is no way around it. I was in a similar situation, and the only other option is to get the prerequisites waived for the course.
You would have to take both concurrently as the Biochem department does not waive prereqs for Biochem 2BB3 in my experience.

Take Physics 1B03 in first term, and then Orgo and Biochem in second term. If that doesn't work out then you'll have to take Physics and Orgo in the same semester. There's no other way around it. It's best that you do it this way, cuz if you leave it for later, it will only mess you up. I had a friend who dropped the orgos during the year, and planned to take it in the summer. But because he dropped 2OB3, he was forced to drop 2BB3, which meant that he had to take it in 3rd year, which would push Biochem 3D03 into 4th year...it just messed up when he could take certain courses..so yea..just do it the way its meant to be, lol

kinda unfair considering that for artsci students, health sci students, and physics students in biochem specializations, orgo II is taken in third year, but biochem 2bb3 is still a required course for second year. though pretty much everyone i know in those cases took orgo before third year. you're still considered a level ii student in the summer between 2nd and 3rd year, so you could probably take physics then if you really wanted to.

For Biochem, since 2B03 + 2BB3 are integral to other courses, I can see why they need both in 2nd year.
How much Orgo is necessary for either, I don't know.
I took BC 20B3, and I didn't find Orgo applicable very much at all. Chem 1AA3 knowledge was sufficient, IMO, but I may be wrong.
