Chem Bio 2P03 - Physical Chemistry
Hello,

I couldn't find too much information on this course. I did see the course outline and it looks interesting. Can anyone tell me how it was in terms of difficulty?

Thanks

Well, last year we had quite the epic fail of a prof (he doesn't work here anymore...which should speak for itself). We were using the tests and notes of the prof who taught it the year before, though. Most of the material itself probably won't be too bad, if you have a half-decent prof. Like, one who knows how to balance equations properly and isn't completely chemistry-challenged. In the past few years, it's been a relatively challenging course, but a good chunk of people still managed to do relatively well.

The first bit is very easy, straight from first year chem, and after that it's most of the same concepts, just applied differently and expanded. Also, lots of math-y derivations, and you're not given any formula sheets because you're expected to 'understand' the formulas and relationships between variables and therefore be able to derive them. Again, if you have a prof who actually understands how the derivations work, as opposed to telling you to take his word that line 1=line 2, it's not too bad.

I think the difficulty of this course lies in not having a formula sheet, and also depends on the prof and how much time you have to put into the course. I have no idea what Kruse is like as a prof (I've never heard of him/her), so the course could be entirely different from previous years. We had a brutal exam, which definitely hurt a lot of people's marks, but yours might be totally different.

So it looks as if the course is quite math oriented. Were the tests more math, or theory? And what exactly made the exam so difficult
Thanks again

All tests/exam were MC only, and they were both math and theory--a pretty good mix, I'd say.

The exam was ridiculous. After the prof told someone the wrong thing to do, I pretty much gave up. A lot of the questions were nothing like we'd ever seen before. Some questions required intermediate formulas (like, ones that you come up with when deriving one equation from another), so you couldnt even get away with just memorizing a ton of formulas. I really can't remember specifics, it's been a while and I went out drinking right after (it was a Saturday night 7-10pm exam) because, among other things, I wanted to erase the exam from my memory.

Again, this is just because the prof who taught the course the year before us made really hard tests...I assume he actually understood the material and thus was able to teach it better than the guy we had. Your prof might not put any emphasis on deriving equations or anything, he might even decide to give you guys a formula sheet! So I wouldn't worry too much about it right now. Just be glad you won't have our prof

Haha, drinking was a must. It was my friend's 19th, and we'd just finished 3 of our hardest exams in 3 days.

I hope it's better for you
