Classics 2MT3

Took this course in Fall 2015 with Dr. Stephen Russell. This course teaches you about the roots of medical terminology and how to define them. You learn to memorize terminations, prefixes and forming medical definitions. Dr. Russell is an awesome prof who has zero background in medicine but teaches the course with a Latin background. He's an entertainer and the three hour night class is fun but he does go off topic here and there. There were 3 midterms (best 2 out of 3 worth 10% each), moodle assignments (basically practice questions with unlimited attempts) worth 20%, and a 60% final. The midterms were all written answers, meaning he provides a word and you have to define it. You could get part marks here but the final was all MC, so it was either you knew it or you didn't. Many preferred the MC format as easy marks since the answer is in front of you but others didn't so it may just be personal preference for people. Overall, this course is well-organized and many people tend to get 12s easily. Worth taking and you learn something useful about defining medical terms.

Russel is a legit prof. Literally the most down to earth guy. The course content is a little dry but what can you expect from a bunch of latin words

The online assignments/questions are literally free marks if you put the work in because they have unlimited attempts. The key is to do them a little each week so that you have practice for the midterms (which are harder than the final).

Overall though, I would recommend this course to anyone. Knowing latin medical terminology can help to understand medical/scientific literature and Dr.Russel is amazing. He's approachable, knowledgable, and mostly marks by himself and still gets marks back to you very quickly! He will admit if he made a marking mistake and always gives students opportunities to bring a test to him and have it fixed right away in class.

Good class, amazing prof, take it.
