Club Thode - Glass It In?
How about an enclosure around the cafe in Thode Library?
Last year a cafe was brought into Thode Library. Many were upset by this (along with the removal of books and study space in the rest of the renovation), but many like the idea of having a place to drop $10 for lunch so close to the library.
The debate of the existence of the cafe is over (not that there really ever was one), now here's a new idea: A glass enclosure around it (like they did in Tim Hortons to house the smokers before the full Smoking Ban came into effect). It's not uncommon for the smells of burning sandwiches and the sounds of coffee grinders and milk frothers to be heard anywhere on the two floors (of three + a basement) that are exposed to the cafe.
Here's the question: Should an enclosure be built to separate the cafe and its byproducts (loud conversations, smells, noise from refrigeration and cooking equipment) from the rest of the library?
An enclosure would not cost much (considering that the MSU recently approved the spending of $400 000 on some renovations in the campus bar) and would greatly improve the experiences of both those using the cafe facility and most definitely those using the library proper (that is, the library part of the library). It should have been done in the first place, but it's not too late to do it now.
What do you think?

I absolutely agree with this. I have been avoiding Thode ever since the renovations since the whole "open concept" floor plan on the first floor is doing a hell of a job in making it too noisy for me to study there.

I 100% agree with this. If I wanted to hear the sounds and smells that come with a coffee shop, I'd go back to my first job at Tim Hortons. I go to a library to study. The last thing I want around me is the smell of coffee (which often gives me headaches).

OK I think something odd is going on with the poll - votes for top and bottom options seem to appear at the same time. I've sent a support request in.

Maybe it's just a coincidence?

It could be, but that three times the votes seem to have come all at once caused me to wonder. Probably nothing but I wanted to be sure.

I totally agree. But its pretty nice cafe and I love that fireplace and its awesome having it there. Thode is pretty ugly though... looks really, really outdated. The cafe makes it look nice but yeh they should have it isolated. People like to chat a lot to and sound travels on the first floor so it gets pretty annoying.

I couldn't agree more. I don't like cafes in places like Thode, but I don't object to them outright if they help (by brining in money).
You've pointed out the way I feel in general about the whole first floor. It looks nice, seems like it would have been a good idea on paper, but the practicalities were really, really missed. Sound baffles seem to have been scattered here and there but clearly the effort was not good enough. Even some "Please respect your fellow students and whisper, if you must talk" signs would have been great. Smell baffles have yet to be invented I believe .

I don't really mind though, as I'm going to be spending my time there looking at my books. I'd actually like them to keep it ugly, to keep the people that care about that kind of thing out! hahaha
(not to mean you!!! - that doesnt come out as I'd like it to sound)
