Commerce 3FB3 - Securities
Curious if anyone has taken this course and if so, what they thought of it? I have heard it can be difficult but really interesting. Any reviews on the prof, Qui?

GROUP WORK
Students will form groups to trade in securities and manage their portfolio in the stock market
competition. Each group would comprise no more than 3 students. The group will be assigned
one account number which they will use to register on line. Both the group members are responsible
for their trading decisions as well as the preparation of the final trading report

hopefully that means groups of 1 are allowed, don't have to worry about scheduling shit. (I'm taking this course too)

I loved it. good class...the Prof is boring but the class is fun. I got a 10 but I barely went to class. All the notes are on the slides and assignments are easy.
If you guys end up taking it I have an amazing formula sheet i can send you if I find it.

Hi Katia,
so do you have to have previous knowledge with stocks to do ok in the course? I am actually in my final year, along with the policy course I have this term (which I heard is a lot of work), so I am just trying to get a good sense if I can manage given the various projects that will go on simultaneously.

Thanks again

Honestly, I didn't do anything for that class during the term. I had a week to study for the final, and All I did was study 7 days straight and did good on the exam.
I worked alot on the assigments as well.. tehre are only 2 and got over 90% on both so it helps spending time o n them.

also, policy isn't a lot of work, its mainly class discussion and all that stuff. project is a joke and the take home report takes 3 days to do and thats all

PS- I do have a pretty good knowledge of stocks and stuff, but I don't think that matters a lot, since this course is meant to teach you everything about it .

Neat. I'm taking the course with you. Should be fun!
You in the night class?

Course shouldn't be too challenging.

I'm in the day class. I fell asleep as did 1/5 of the class (prof counted 10 people asleep).

@katia, how important were the questions in the powerpoint slides? like these 2:
Suppose this:
-You invest $4000 per year
-60% in stocks and 40% in bonds (an average of 9% a year)
-"turn-over" rate: 20% of your investments each year.
-Tax rate: 35%

or:
If a $1 increase in stock prices leads to a $0.04 increase in consumption and investment, and a multiplier of 1.4, then how much does it contribute to the GDP growth?

the answers are not in the textbook as far as I can tell...

Hmm first one sounds like stuff I covered-ish 2I03(Or the CMRC finance equivalent of it) and second one possibly a type of 2H03(I took last year) or 2HH3 :S Are both of them assumed to have been taken in 2nd year?

How'd you find 2I03 and 2H03?

2H03 in retrospect was/is easy to the point of being a joke. The Prof Khan just copy pastes the course pack old quizzes/midterms for the exam/midterms, I ofcourse didn't know that back in first year when I took it(long story why) but I think I could have easily gotten a 10+ It is possible for people to learn absolutely nothing and still get a decent grade

2I03 is a nightmare though, the material is excessively long and boring and there is almost no economics in it. Its mostly finance and accounting calculations. The prof was kind of hard(Rushleau) and he showed us how the class average was 50-55 and how he was going to bell curve it, so in other words we had people going from 1-7 on the GPA scale. Even a few engineers who took it thought it was hard so that's usually a good gauging meter! I wouldn't recommend it unless you see securities/bonds/stocks as your future career, I was considering that career path before taking this course too!

Haha, thanks for posting this Huzaifa. I needed some reassurance. I'm taking 2H03 with Khan this term, and I've heard the same thing. It should be an easy 12! Khan's an awesome professor, he's a huge Leafs fan. He spends like 15 minutes of lecture time talking about the Leafs/hockey. :p
