Commerce Internships
Whats the process like and how many jobs are typically available? My area of specialization is accounting and finance.

The process: You sign up for CIP through OSCAR (not Mugsi, even though it's considered a 'course').
The course itself is just mostly resume and interview guides. It's only a couple sessions (once per week) so it's not THAT time consuming.

You have to get your Resume approved by CBCD before you can start applying for jobs. If you've haven't picked up the resume guide from their office and followed it religiously, be prepared to see a LOT of red. If you've already had a lot of work/resume experience, then that's a pretty good start.

There's Phase I (IIRC, jobs posted before around March), and Phase II (from that point onwards)

There were a crapload of Finance jobs and still a good number of accounting jobs. The only real hard-to-find jobs would be marketing and HR. You'll be fine, but don't be dead set on getting a job with some major accounting/finance firm or something.

Also: make sure you keep yourself updated on OSCAR. Since some companies kinda show up there unexpectedly. IIRC, KPMG suddenly posted job openings that closed in less than a week. Apparently Mercedes Benz also had job openings that were only up for 2 days or something and I didn't hear about it until much later.

That said, I didn't look through any Phase II jobs.

Hey Jeff, do you know how difficult is it to get work if you've never had work experience of any kind? ._.

TBH, I lucked out when I got my internship. This is mostly reiterating what CBCD and past interns have told me. Now that that's out of the way... >_>

I remember talking to the CBCD advisor and she said something along the lines of
'The thing about internship positions is that employers don't expect students to have worked in a related job or in some cases any job.
Just try to present yourself well and research what kind of skills they would be looking for (e.g. general stuff like 'analytical skills', 'problem solving skills')'

If you haven't had work experience, try going for extracurriculars. Keep in mind CBCD *strongly* suggests you take out anything from high school. Even volunteer stuff, and will grill your resume badly if they see any of that on there.

It sounds like I'm going to have a relatively empty resume. >_> Thanks though.

Yeah, I would suggest thinking about joining some clubs (well the ones you could probably come up with marketable skills, not the ones that just go clubbing all the time =/)

My only other job was at a Chinese restaurant. I didn't even do anything extracurricular until second year.

As a side note, I took "Death and Dying" in second year and they asked me if I was morbid/emo during the interview... Um... maybe avoid that course.

Some jobs didn't ask for your transcript. I'm guessing they were less focused on academic performance.

As for the ones that did, I'm fairly certain that they'd be more interested in the courses that actually relate to the job (plus you need a certain average to be in the CIP program to begin with).

Also, I doubt they would hire someone if they're interview went terribly, even if they got a 11+ average =/
