DisplayPort to HDMI
I have a DisplayPort connector on my laptop, which I wish to transmit movies to my television. However, televisions only have HDMI connectors.

I looked at cables/adapters that convert DisplayPort to HDMI and they cost $20+, which is really expensive. I can buy HDMI cables from the dollar store.

Does anyone know of a cheaper solution? I don't understand why they created the DisplayPort standard if it doesn't work with TVs. :(

Order one from Hong Kong or China on eBay. That's your best bet. Although quality goes out the window and it will take 20 days to get here..... but realistically I bought two of the ones from the Apple Store and they both became useless after about 6 months, flickering, disconnecting at the slightest touch and etc.

(Not sure about the quality - but the more money you put in, generally, the better it gets)

I have had it for about 8 months and it works perfectly.

Get one off of amazon and different hdmi cable brands don't make a difference (other than physically staying together vs falling apart). It'll either transmit the entire digital signal or none, and doesn't degrade quality

Not in this case. All of them break in a few weeks if you remove it almost everyday, even Apple's

Well, it's gonna cost a lot because DisplayPort requires an active adapter to convert to DVI/HDMI (a.k.a. one that uses electronics inside the adapter to convert the signal, rather than just wires being rerouted). Some laptops/video cards are able to compensate internally and work with the cheaper passive adapters, but a lot of them don't.

Make sure you check whether your laptop/video cards requires an active adapter for DisplayPort -> DVI/HDMI conversion before you buy!

I bought one earlier this year from Canada Computers so I could add a third monitor to my desktop, and it cost me like $40... feels bad man.
