I'm unsure of the time it will open, try at 12:00am, 3:30am and 8:30am. You will be able to add/drop/change courses.

Sectioning occurs on August 3rd after SOLAR closes. You will receive your timetable (and thus your sections) on August 11th. On August 13th, solar will reopen and let you change your sections (if space permits).

hello all. I am an incoming first year life sci, just hearing that solar reopens for tutorial and core picks on August 13, regrettably, I am going to England on the 12th for two weeks!!? My flight is late-ish so I will actually be on the plane when Solar reopens-does anyone know If I can log into Solar while in England or on my laptop on the plane, or do you have to be in Canada?! Sorry! I am technologically SLOW. LOL. I know this is not really a McMaster related question but anything will help. I don't want to be stuck with a crappy schedule!!!

I'm pretty sure you can log on to SOLAR from anywhere. I would suggest sending UTS an email. They are very helpful.

Hmm... ....

I don't know, good question. I think I might've heard about planes having wi-fi but I don't know how that's possible.

That sounds expensive. If it is available, it's probably only available in somewhere technologically savvy (Japan) or somewhere epically rich (Dubai).

It is possible. I don't think phone signals and electronics really interfere with airplane equipment much.... they probably did at some point, but not anymore.

Heh, that seems a little high up. I think those work over phone networks. Imagine the roaming charges !

Well, does out internet come from satellites or from ground towers?

You're not allowed to have anything on a plane that broadcasts a signal (eg. cell phone, lap top) as it can interfere with instruments. You can turn off the wireless on a laptop, or turn on "Airplane Mode" on a cell phone so that they don't broadcast, then use it, but you won't be able to get on the internet.

I don't know if that really matters anymore. It's more of a precaution. I think it really mattered around when airplanes first came out, and the only broadcasting equipment one could own was a walky talky, which was probably probably powerful enough to interact with the planes radio systems.

Stuff now like Bluetooth operates on a different spectrum and is a very weak signal compared to what the plane's using.

I think they're realizing this now, and that's why you see more "You can use your cell phone on the plane!" and "Wifi onboard!".

Very true. Also the power of the signal has decreased since the first phone come out. So now you can use cell phones in the hospital, except when you are like 5 metres from the instruments or something like that.

Probably, you can tone it down for now but I used to check like 20 times a day when SOLAR re-opens after sectioning (after you get your schedule).
