Doing a 5th year?
Hey im currently in my 4th year and I am thinking I will be coming back after I graduate to take extra pre-reqs that I have not yet taken to apply to med schools out of Ontario and in the US. I was wondering if anybody knew how I would apply for a 5th year? Also, I know that out of first year you can only take 6 first year courses, but If I come back for another year how many can I take? I need like 2 more first year courses that I want to take in my 5th year. I am planning on making an appointment with an academic advisor once school starts again, but any feedback on this website would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks & Happy New Year!

You shouldn't really need to apply. You should be able to just take the courses under "continuing education" once you graduate (assuming you meet all the prerequisites, and there aren't faculty based restrictions).

I was told that if I graduate with my degree in June, I wouldn't be allowed to come back and upgrade to a co-op degree because once you graduate, you're out...so I would talk to an academic advisor about this.

Why don't you postpone your graduation until next year and come back to take more courses. As for taking more first year courses than "allowed", that's just for your degree. Any first year courses you take above the amount "allowed" just doesn't count towards your degree.

I remember the co-op teacher saying a story similar like this , how if you finish all the degree requirements they automatically graduate you so its harder to come back and finish courses for minors etc. But I guess you could come back as a continuing student or drop a course this semester if it is offered first semester next year. ..just some options

All you need to do is go to your academic advisor and tell them. They'll give you a form to fill out, and you have to apply online (it's like one click, it's very easy). I graduated and came back for an extra year, it's definitely possible to do this. The extra courses won't be counted under your degree though, so I don't know how that will affect med school applications. Ask the advisor about this.

Since you'll have graduated at that point, it shouldn't matter how many first year courses you take. You'll be considered "continuing education", which means you can take whatever you want, as long as you have the prereqs.
