Your marks are likely low because you're finding high school different from university, and haven't adjusted. You might have been a good student in your high school, but things don't work the same way here. There are higher expectations, a higher work load, and in many cases less academic support (or at least, less support forced on you--it's there if you take the time to seek it out).
No, it's not always like this for first years. Some first years find their marks go up, if they learn better in a university setting. Students more used to the high school way of doing things tend to find their marks drop. If your marks are low then you should reevaluate your approach to your coursework--in your case, focus on different methods of studying for midterms, and take a look at past midterms to learn what screwed you over...this is especially important with exams coming up.
