ENG 1AA3 or 2R03 Monsters and Magic?
Hey everyone. For the physiotherapy requirements, I have to take an English course that has an essay component with 1500 words (total can be from more than one essay).
I was thinking of taking either:
- ENGLISH 2R03 Monsters and Magic
or
- ENGLISH 1AA3 Literature in English: Longer Genres
Has anyone taken these courses? I want to know whether the Monsters and Magic course has a good essay component, and whether it is more interesting to take than the Longer Genres course.
Also, are there are other English courses that you'd recommend instead?
Thank you!

when i took english 1aa3 we only had two 500 word essays - so you would be short 500 words :(

If you are interested in short stories, poems and essays, 1A03 has a 500word essay and a 1000word essay.

Monsters and Magic is offered every 2-3 years; so it may not be offered again until 2010-2011. Because of this, I know very few people who have taken the course, and those who did didn't enjoy it.
I would personally suggest:
Native American Lit, Native Canadian Lit, or Popular Culture. I've taken all three, and enjoyed them all. There are also reviews for each of them in the reviews section.

Do you remember why they didn't like it? This is one of the courses that I really wanted to take, so I'm just wondering.

I had really wanted to take it too, but I was glad I didn't.
Something along the lines of the material was boring, too wordy, flat-out not interesting. There were also qualms with the lecture style of the prof and the kinds of assignments/essays that needed to be completed.
The people who took the class weren't English majors; so I'd really focus on that fact, seeing as you are also not in English.

Hmm... did you take this course recently? I checked in the review section and there's one 1000 word essay and another 500 word essay.
To lorend, what was the word count for the english classes you recommended? I looked at the review section but they didn't say anything about it.

Both the Native lit had a 500 and then a 1000 word (you could always email the prof, Rick Monture ( [email protected]) and double check). Rick is also an awesome prof, if that's any incentive!
I believe Pop culture is around the same; I took it quite a few years ago though so I'm not sure if the course has changed or not.

Hey I looked into the native literature course mentioned but it has some prerequisites which you may or may not have...(Six units of Level II Indigenous Studies or six units of Level II English or permission of the instructor).
PS... I also want to take an english course and am considering African Literature (English 3EE3) Does anyone has any opinions on the course, types of assignments or list of books read? or know anyone who took the course? Thanks.

Thanks for mentioning the prereqs Sinthusized. I'm actually surprised that the classes have them; so I didn't think about looking.
To answer your question: If you've never taken an English course, don't take a third year one. You're going to get nailed. English majors get nailed still.

If you really want to take any of the Indigenous Studies courses just email [email protected] and tell them you're really interested in the course and they will waive the prerequisite for any class you're interested in as long as you have the profs permission... More often than not you will get the waiver as the Indigenous Studies Program wants to encourage more students to take their classes... Hope this helps anyone else who maybe following this post
