Exam in 3 hours and I am vomiting and struggling to stay awake. What can I do?
A year back I went to Cuba, it was my first time out of Canada and my last. Two days into the vacation I wake up sweating with a fever. I was in an out of the bathroom over and over again and vomiting. Joints hurt, teeth hurt, no appetite, I hyperventilate if I'm not outside because I feel like im suffocating.... Lost 15 pounds within a month of coming back.

After seeing numerous doctors and doing numerous tests, then being sent to other specialists, the final diagnoses was 'unknown virus'... basically I was told that I would just have to live with these phases of feeling like shit here and there.

Luckily this has never interfered with my life to much, but of course I had to have one of these phases start during the weekend that just past. I was really hoping it'd pass by today but I woke up this morning sweating, and have been vomiting since noon every time I try eating something. So it's been a good 14-16 hours since I've actually got something down.

I manged to get to the doctor earlier today and he wrote me a doctors note (hes well aware of what im going through) but I'm not sure what I should do. I've never had to do something like this in university. I have an accounting exam at 7 and I'm not even sure if I'm going to be able to stay awake that long, every time I sit down I start passing out and that's with two red bulls in me. Even if I do manage to make it in there I'm not going to even be functioning properly and don't see how I can sit through a 3 hour exam of this nature.

Is there anything I can do? Are notes accepted for this sort of thing? The only thing I know of when it comes to stuff like this are MSAFs but those don't apply to exams right?

Should I not risk it and just drink another red bull or two and try making it through?

I am panicking so much right now which is not helping my cause.

BTW im in commerce if that changes anything, in the meantime im going to try and get as much sleep as I can

That sucks, I hope you feel better. If things are really bad and you don't think you can manage, you can always ask to defer the exam. You'll have to rewrite it next Feb, probably during reading week. If you're ok with having to wait a couple of months, and then study a subject you've probably forgotten, then that's probably the way to go.

Feel better, get lots of rest.

I just googled this 'deferring of exams' and found a form that I can fill out.

You said 'ask' though? Do I actually go into the office and ask them, or do I just do it through the form?

I never deferred any exams before so I can't say for sure. But ya I would fill out the form and have it ready. There are instructions online right?

Probably try to do it ASAP since your exam is soon.

..
Thank you

I found the one for commerce. Luckily it says I have 5 days to hand it in and I honestly don't think I can even make the walk from the taxi to the lecture room in the state I'm in.

Even if I go I'm just going to fail because I can't funtion right now. So I'm just going to cross my fingers and hope this works. I was looking at some other posts and have seen that people have gotten away with this deferring of exams when they simply sleep in. I have a doctors note and a medical history confirming my illness so if that doesn't suffice..I don't know what will.

Some advice for the rest of you. Don't go to Cuba. Biggest mistake I've ever made in my life.

I deferred an exam in first year and it wasn't due to illness. I just went to my faculty, filled out a form, and few days later they emailed me the confirmation.
For your case, i think you need to print out a form (doctors note), have it filled out by your doctor, and give it to your department within some specific time (few days i think).
You can email your prof and let him know that you will not be writing the exam, but that one is optional i think (i didn't email my prof).
Don't worry, they will grant you the deferral.
Best of luck!

youre fine. go to the go and have them fill that special deferral form out and have them mark one of the top two boxes (severe or serious). then within 5 days, go to your faculty office and give the note. you end up writing the exam in mid june. dont stress. tons of people defer exams because they arent ready for em.

What if the course is a prerequisite for something else I'm planning on taking next year?

My friends' experience has always been that they will assume success in the deferred course and allow you to register. If you don't pass and therefore don't meet the prereqs to be there, they'll pull you out by the first week of classes.
