Extracurriculars?
How many do you think we could handle along with schoolwork throughout the year?

Humanities doesn't have a lot of hours of class a week, so you could probably do a few and still be okay. Just be careful when you get assigned essays, because those take a large amount of time to complete. Just stay on top of your work and extracurriculars won't be a problem.

It depends entirely on what you're interested in getting involved with. All extra curriculars demand varying levels of time commitment.

What are you thinking of?

I honestly don't know. I want to get involved with atleast one thing that is somewhat serious like a social justice group but the others I just want to do for fun.

It depends on what you want to do... student government can be an amazing experience (and that includes MSU or your faculty society). And as I'm sure you've heard, there's hundreds of clubs on campus.

In terms of how much time you will have, that's completely up to you. Some people somehow seem to be able to skip classes and seem like they do no work and still get awesome grades, while others can work their asses off and still have a hard time.

It also depends on how much time you want to spend on other things, such as social life, possibly a job, etc.

I'd start with one thing, especially if it's relatively large such as student government, and go from there. There's plenty of time to join groups and clubs, since they're pretty much always looking for new members.

You gotta realize that as you get involved, there are certain sacrifices you may have to make. Since these extracurricular activities would consume some of your time, you may have to put in more hours into studying and fewer hours into hanging out with friends. There may also be some events or "hang outs" that you may not be able to make. It all really depends on how involved you plan to be though...

A good option is to get involved in the res societies as well, since your in-hall meetings will be held in your building...which means less time spent walking to get there!

In my first year I was involved in 3-4 things (varying by time) and did fine in terms of organizing my time and academics.

I think it depends on your program. I had a mix of social science and humanities classes last year, and I didn't have THAT much spare time especially when midterms/finals rolled around or when assignments were due (which profs seemed like they got together and decided on making them due the same time. >.<).
