The time has come folks! As we knew would happen in our
sneek peek post a while back, Facebook has upgraded their interface to a new slicker design with dropdowns at the top and less on the side. So far I've heard nothing but complaints about not being able to find things as easily, and people saying "if it's not broken, don't fix it". However, I'm sure we'll all come to love the new layout like we have come to love the 'feed'
Menus are better organized
The core elements of Facebook that everyone uses are big and on top. The applications that people choose to use are on the left-hand menu. Things related to settings are on the upper right hand corner. Everything else is now in the footer.
The profile has been simplified. Use the new drop-down menu to get around.
Only the most commonly used links are under the profile picture; the rest are in the footer.
Status has been integrated into your profile better.
This drop-down menu is the way to get to anyone’s content, including your own, quickly from his or her profile page.
Each application’s main page highlights the most recent or interesting things.
Since you can now get to your own stuff most easily from your Profile page, these application’s main pages will highlight your friends’ recent content as well as your own. The new Photos page is a good example: you now see all the albums your friends have made right away when you get to the Photos page.
Some Key Points:
- A navigation and profile simplification—Ever feel like you couldn't find what you were looking for on that long left menu? We've redistributed all these menu options into "Core Aspects" on the top menu, "Applications" on the left menu, Settings on the top right, and everything else at the footer of the page. As for the profile, we've added drop-down menus to the top of every user's profile page, making it easier to get to the information you want to see. You can read more about the navigation changes here.
- The introduction of "Inbox"—The former "My Messages" and "My Shares" pages have been redesigned to make the communication between you and your friends easier. Now you can send a group of your friends a message with or without a shared link, and easily track the ensuing conversation in one "thread" in your Inbox.
- Network Pages—To make networks more relevant to their real-world counterparts, we've built out pages where network members, events, trends, and demographic info are displayed. Anything visible on a Network page is something that is already accessible to members of that network, and we've added additional "Publicize" options to groups and events that make it easy to distinguish what will and will not appear on your Network page. In addition, each page has a full version for members of the networks, and a public version—with certain kinds of information blocked—for people outside that network.
