Faculty and Program Series Part Eight: Faculty of Engineering
Faculty Series Part Eight: Faculty of Engineering
By SALEHA MUNAWAR, MACINSIDERS
Established in 1958, the faculty of engineering has greatly expanded to meet the needs of undergraduate students and the graduate and research communities. As the most research intensive engineering faculty in Canada, its professors receive the highest amount of research funding per faculty member in Canada. Faculty members play leading roles in graduate research, and in consulting with industry and government.
There are seven departments under the faculty, including Chemical Engineering (http://www.chemeng.mcmaster. ca/), Civil Engineering (http://www.eng.mcmaster.ca/civil/), Computing and Software (http://www.cas.mcmaster.ca/cas/), Electrical and Computer Engineering (http://www.ece.mcmaster.ca/), Engineering Physics (http://engphys.mcmaster.ca/), Materials Science and Engineering (http://mse.mcmaster.ca/), and Mechanical Engineering (http://www.mech.mcmaster.ca/).
There are numerous different disciplines to choose from offered by these departments, including some unique five year programs like Engineering & Management (http://www.eng.mcmaster.ca/engandmgt/index.html), Engineering & Society (http://www.eng.mcmaster.ca/engandsoc/index.html), Engineering & International Studies (http://www.eng.mcmaster.ca/engandsoc/international.htm).
Graduate degrees are also offered in all disciplines, and the faculty includes the McMaster School of Biomedical Engineering (http://msbe.mcmaster.ca/), McMaster School of Computational Engineering and Science (http://computational.mcmaste r.ca/), and the McMaster School of Engineering Practice Master of Engineering Design (M.E.D.) (http://msep.mcmaster.ca/), as well as the McMaster-Mohawk Bachelor of Technology Partnership (http://btech.mcmastermohawk. ca/).
Some Recent Awards and Features:
Sarah Dickson- Early Researcher Award for research in groundwater contamination
Douglas Barber – Officer of the Order of Canada (2007)
Brian Baetz – President’s Award for Excellence in Instruction, McMasterUniversity
Doug Keller- Veronika Czemeda Staff Award, McMaster Engineering
A brand new, state-of-the-art Engineering Research and Education building is under construction on the McMaster campus to facilitate the growth of the faculty into new research areas and study.
