The School of Nursing has provided leadership within Hamilton for over 60 years in nursing education, scholarship, research and practice. They many partnerships locally, nationally and internationally through their amazing faculty, staff, students and graduates. They have made a positive impact on the nursing community and the development of the nursing profession. It is accredited by the Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing.

Faculty Awards:

Alba DiCenso, Jennifer Skelly and Sue Matthews have each received a Centennial Award from the Canadian Nurses Association. They have all made positive contributions to the nursing community.

Academic Setting:

Classes are small so you will be given the opportunity to get to know professors and classmates very well. Most of your classes will have no more than 12 students. The School of Nursing uses problem-based learning which they believe better prepares students for their jobs after graduation.

In this program students will develop many skills such as:
  • Communicate in a variety of forms
  • Help others learn
  • Work in teams
  • Leadership Skills
  • Use the concepts they help others in the workplace
Tips For Success:
  • Do all your work.
  • Attend every class.
  • Do your readings.
  • Participate in labs and clinical placements. Try to get the most out of them because it could really help you after you graduate.
Academic Opportunities:

You will have many opportunities to put what you have learned to the test during clinical placements. The School of Nursing has many partnerships with many hospitals and community settings so you can get a feel for what specialty you would like to get into. There are also international outpost opportunities that you can take part in in your final year. International and outpost placements gives nursing student insight into the global health issues, the different healthcare systems and the roles of nurses internationally. The School of Nursing also believes that the best nursing practise is based on scientific evidence. The program gives you research experience and teaches you to evaluate research and promote critical thinking and problem solving skills. The is also the Nurse-Practioner program that you can complete after your BScN. This program is completed in 12 months. Here is the FAQ that answers many questions about the program.

Looking Forward - Future Paths and Occupations:

Nurses are employed in hospitals, schools and many other places. Overall becoming a nurse is a very fulfilling job. You can make a difference in the lives of many people.
