I am a first year in Social sciences starting this September. My courses are pol sci 1g06 soc work 1a06 soc sci 1ss3 woman st 1a03 and sociol 1a06. Please give insight what books you thought were useless and not work the money. I know its too early to purchase as well and i am not trying to but when the time comes is there an online portal where other students post their used books to sell? Also, is there an online store with prices for the bookstore provided by mac?

I'm not in social science so I'll only address the last two questions. MacInsiders itself has an online marketplace (it's on the top toolbar, between "course reviews" and "more") where you can buy or sell textbooks. Just pick your year.

On Facebook, there's the McMaster Used Textbook Sales group at:
https://www.facebook.com/groups/425709655081/?fref=ts

The McMaster Campus Store has a site with a search function. You input your class and they will list all the materials required for that class and the price they are sold at. Right now the booklist for summer school is up; the Fall 2013 book list won't be up until August 19. The website is http://www.bookstore.mcmaste r.ca/ and you click Textbook Search.

i would stay away from psych's all stuff as the only thing we are really tested on is on those modules he posts online. And for the econs, they aren't needed all that much but are good at clearing stuff that you missed out or cannot understand from lecture etc. They are detailed and easy to follow

I would say that's not necessarily true. While you're not "really" tested on it, there was usually 1-2 questions from the text on each quiz. That's 3-6% of your mark right there. While occasionally the text question would overlap with the module stuff, I feel at least once every quiz I had to look something up in the textbook.

(Plus, I found the textbook to be pretty interesting and it's under 40 so it isn't super expensive either.)
