Genetics - Which Prof?
Bio 2C03 is taught by Dr. Dej (2nd semester) and Dr. Gupta (1st semester).

Which prof is better in terms of easiness? I heard Dr. Dej's exam for genetics was a killer, so I'm worried about taking it with her.

Any opinions?

Really the biggest factor should be which prof will help you learn more and in a more effective way... that said, idk where you got the idea that she's a difficult prof, but I've taken a couple of courses with her (including genetics) and they were some of the easiest courses I've ever taken. I aced the exams, got 12s with little effort. Then again, her teaching style also worked really well for me, so I knew the material from lectures and didn't really have to study.

Especially considering easiness. I found Dr. Dej's exam/test to be easy, cause she actually teaches you the material (I took genetics with her and bedard and found her part to be easy). However, when Gupta was teaching with Dej, they were disorganized and Dr. Dej put a lot of "weird" questions because of the miscommunication between the 2 profs on what materials were covered (but I only heard this from someone else).

I can learn independently, it's like when people are picking Zhu or Kajiura for Bio 1A03, if you can study independently and want someone that's easy you go for Zhu, if you'd rather have someone who can actually lecture then you'd go for Kajiura, different people have different reasons of picking profs. Thanks for your response.

Thanks a lot, I'm leaning towards Dej for now. Any other opinions?

Dej for sure. She's super nice, a decent prof and actually cares about her students.

I'd have to agree with choosing Dej. She's actually very approachable, and her lecture notes are neat and complete (none of those slides with just a picture of some random molecule) :'D.

Thanks guys. But I heard Dr. Dej's exam was a killer (145 marks), almost twice the length of the other prof, and higher in difficulty too.

Should this stop me from taking it? I can always get her notes from another student that took it before, I'm more concerned about the testing.

No, this should not stop you from taking it.

145 marks isn't a lot for an exam. Twice the number of marks as the other prof doesn't mean twice the length. Unless someone took both exams they can't actually say whether or not it was higher in difficulty. In addition, just because one person found it hard that doesn't mean that everyone did, and it also doesn't mean that it was the prof's fault.

Like I said before, I don't know where you're hearing this stuff...but you should take a moment to seriously consider the validity of it.

Also, it's a risk to use one prof's notes and then write another prof's tests, because the two profs may not emphasize the same things. It's different from a course like first year chem where all the profs work as an instructional team and all give the same test.

This is where I'm getting some of the posts about 2C03 being difficult with Dr. Dej. But you're right, 145 marks doesn't mean it's a tough exam, but I have read multiple posts saying how hard the exam was, second hardest exam after Physics 1B03, etc.

And I would just use Dr. Dej's notes because they're more complete, I would still supplement them with the other prof's notes to get the best of both.
