GEOG 1HB3 or ECON 1B03
I'm going into my second year, and I'm looking for a good first year elective to take.
I'm deciding between Geography 1HB3 and Economics 1B03.

I am interested in the content of the geography course, but I heard that the assignments for it can be kind of annoying and there are a lot of them...

I'm not too keen on doing any math or anything and I'm not too sure about what I would learn in the econ course, but I know its somewhat of a bird course....

Any recommendations one which one I should take?

Thanks

Geography.

You should never take a course just because you've heard it's a bird course, especially if there's another one that actually interests you.

I actually would recommend Geo 1HA3 over 1HB3 but they are both good courses. Go for Geography. The assignments are not too bad, you're only doing 4 assignments in total, the last one being a group assignment. This applies for both 1HA3 and 1HB3

what is the difference between the 1HA3 and 1HB3 course? I chose 1HB3 because I think I would like that material better

1HB3 focuses more on world issues (hunger, environment, population) and HA3 focuses more on culture (religion, food, language). I would recommend Geog 1HB3 over Geog 1HA3. I took botht and I think Geog 1HB3 is easier and the big assignment is less annoying. In both courses here are a ton of little assignments but they are so easy and make up almost 20% of your mark, so its very easy to get a good mark. I'd also recommend, if you get to choose, go with Dr. Peace over Dr. Mercier.

If you're interested in Geog, then go with that. If you do not have a preference between either course go with Econ due to the lesser work load.

If you plan on doing Geography 1HB3, you must not slack off to get a good mark. I don't know what are your strengths and weaknesses, but if you spend a comparable amount of time understanding Econ 1B03 on Geo 1HB3, then you will probably do better. that is from my experience. I got a 12 in Econ 1B03 and an 11 in 1HB3, the thing about 1HB3 is it is dependent on if you can not be dumb and give proper answers to assignments, do the quizzes right and find a good partner for the assignments. Econ 1B03 is purely understanding and the math is grade 9 math

Good Luck!

lots of people find econ challenging especially if they dont have much of a math background.

I found 1HA3 topic more interesting than 1HB3. That's only because I like talking about the aspects of language, religion and culture, that the reason why I recommend 1HA3 more. I found the course a bit easier than 1HB3 (of course this is my opinion). Aside from what I said earlier and what others have said, you cannot slack off in order to get a good mark. Both course do overlap at some point but they are both interesting overall...
