GPA calculation
Heyy! So I want to make sure that I'm calculating my GPA correctly. For example if my grades were: 12 (3 units) , 11 (6 units), 9 (3 units):

overall percentage grade: (12+ 11+ 11 +9)/ 48= 89.6%

I've found a GPA conversion chart (http://careers.mcmaster.ca/students/...version-chart), but I'm confused how to use it. Can someone explain how to convert a percentage average of all grades to gpa on a 4.0 scale? Thanks!

You calculate it like this:
(12*3 + 11*6 + 9*3)/12

You don't need to calculate your average though, it's already calculated for you in your grade report.

As for converting, just take your grade and take the corresponding 4.0 scale grade. Then do the same thing as above.

((GP * # of units) + (GP * # of units) + ... ) / total # of units.

It might depend on who's calculating your 4.0 scale GPA, but I know for a fact that OUAC (i.e. for OMSAS, ORPAS, TEAS, or OLSAS) converts each of your individual grades from the 12-point to the 4-point scale, and THEN averages that number.

e.g. Based on your listed grades,

12-POINT 4-POINT
12 --> 4
11 --> 3.9
9 --> 3.3

AVERAGE = (4*3 + 3.9*6 + 3.3*3) / (3+6+3 units) = 3.78

NOT

(12*3 +11*6 +9*3)/(3+6+3 units) = 10.75 = approximately 3.75

Okay I see that there isn't a huge difference in this case but it does often make a difference depending how you calculate the average, so OUAC has standardized it as such.

3.9 for applying in Ontario, 4.0 for applying to American med schools. Otherwise I have no flippin clue.

UofT also uses the 11 as a 4.0 in their conversions... They have A and A+ being equal.
