Even when factoring in downtime (inserting pages to be scanned, etc.), I think it's fair to say that the Scantron is nowhere near the slowest part in this process, especially since marking is going on during the exam period as well.

...Yeah, I'm still waiting on Chem too. I just hope the delay was caused by the profs not being able to decide how much to boost marks.
Well, 20k students each taking 4 courses that's 80k courses. Minus some classes that don't have scantron as part of their exam would be about 50k. I think it's a pretty good estimate since we probably have more than 20k students this year. But if a scantron machine can scan 2000 pages an hour then you're right, that can't possibly be the slowest part of the process. Also if I recall correctly, the chem test is all multiple choice. So I have no idea what took them so long.

I went back to look at some notes that my IA posted about scantrons. You should remember that it takes time to first process the scantrons. You have to make sure that the students bubbled in their student number and version correctly. You have to sort the scantrons by version (but this can obviously be done when checking for correctly filled version bubbles). You have to send the scantrons to the scantron machine (I actually have no idea where it is, but you can just assume it's on campus somewhere so this part is negligible). You have to program the scantron machine (I think this is done by just feeding it a scantron with the correct answers so again negligible). Then you have to pick up the scantrons or get it delivered back. You have to enter the marks and then send it off to the registrar.

So as you can see by that long paragraph, there are many steps to scan a scantron. Obviously the larger the class, the longer it will take. Just sorting the scantons. It took my IA 2 days to process the scantrons for scanning and my class is less than 500 students. Then it took another 5 days to get our marks and that's not including the weekend or the registrar.

Edit: Also, corrections to the test were done a week after the marks were posted up. Now, obviously the IA probably had other work to do during this time, so you can just say the correction is negligible because really, that probably doesn't take any time at all.

Most upper year classes, (Level 2+) especially for engineering, are written.

I had multiple choice questions in all of my classes this year.

If I remember correctly, 3rd year math is half written and half multiple choice but no scantron for the multiple choice. Have fun!

I got that too, how nice of them to send it a year after I've gotten my first year marks.

That's probably a typo. Can a first year confirm?

Point being? That's not even relevant to the discussion; besides, most people who take this class are only doing it as a requirement anyways.
