It doesn't matter. I know several people named Patrick and one calls himself "Patty".

Certainly does for the Irish.. we know nobody name Patty!!!

That is excellent for them, but when it makes reference to the Patron Saint of Ireland, or any Irishman for that matter, it's Paddy.

The name Patrick in Irish Gaelic is Padraig.
Paddy is Irish short for Patrick... whereas Patty is more likely to be interpreted as a refreshing peppermint chocolate treat or a Jamaican Pastry delicacy that may have either meat, chicken or vegetables within.

Happy belated St. Paddy's day... March 18th was a write off for me.

I'm Irish through and through. It doesn't matter. It's a name.

And if you want to through the Saint in there, I highly doubt he'd approve of a glorified excuse to get wasted in his name.

Aaaah Nino, I was breaking balls. Our family were wondering who this Patty person was because everywhere else it's known as Paddy. (Refer to Paddy disambiguation on Wikipedia vs. Patty disambiguation. In this case, reference to Wikipedia is okay.)

And kokosas: A name is a name... but one is correct, and one is incorrect. And who's to say if he would approve or disapprove?

Patty = Patricia
Paddy = Patrick/Padraig.

You're welcome for the lesson, kokosas.

In order for it to be a lesson, someone has to have learned something.

His name was Patrick and he went by Patty to be different. I've never heard of someone named Patricia going by Patty but I suppose it's possible, anyone can take any kind of nick name they want. It doesn't have to follow convention.

And you're right. A name is a name. So if someone wants to say "Happy St. Patty's Day" well, they can say it that way. There is no need to correct them. It's just a name, after all.

"Paddy, a masculine given name, and a common diminutive for Patrick or Pádraig"

"Patty, a common female name, usually short for Patricia"

"Saint Patrick's Day (Irish: Lá ’le Pádraig or Lá Fhéile Pádraig), colloquially St. Paddy's Day or simply Paddy's Day..."

Figure it out. You're welcome, once again.

If you're going to argue with me over someone ELSES preferences, you need to figure out your priorities, cause I'm done with it.

You're welcome.
