Just work hard in first year and don't drop any courses (especially if your thinking about getting into something competitive like civil, mechanical, biomedical, management). Even though the 2 electives are not required for entry into second year and can be taken whenever you should still take them in first year because having a full course (37 units) will make it easier to get into a competitive program
If you have a free choice you are very lucky (can drop courses but can't fail any or else you lose the free choice !).
