You can't go on to grad school without Honours?

Typically not.. at least in the Arts, I'm not quite sure how it works for eng and science.

Honours is used as a prereq for an M.A in these instances because of the additional course work one has to do with an added year, in addition to seminar courses (which teach undergrads essentially how to teach a course since most seminars require at least one session of seminar leadership, usually for the full three hour course with a partner). Also Honours programs allow for the possibility of completing an undergrad thesis which is useful for getting into grad programs, though usually isn't a requirement.

Additionally four years gives students a chance to connect more closely with their professors to get the required academic references for grad school. Though with the influx of CLA (Contractually Limited Appointments) undergrads are finding it exponentially harder to get any sort of significant reference since most of the profs you get don't interact with the student enough to judge their ability to handle graduate work.

But I digress, I could rant about the CLA issue for pages. Back to the original topic, Fronzenmelon you'll be okay, but if you're at all ever concerned with your academics or you have questions about programs and stuff I *highly* recommend talking to Academic Advisors in the Faculty of Humanities Office. They're wonderfully helpful and have saved my rear on more than one occasion. They typically have drop in hours on Mondays and Wednesdays or you can make an appointment.

Everyone is welcome to their personal opinions... just because Ownaginatios thinks Humanities is easy doesn't make it true. I'm in Humanities and I don't think so! We're working hard too, and its difficult to get high marks on subjective stuff like essays and multimedia projects.

Don't make me have to bring out Danielle's Faculty Wars article

I switched into Honours going into third year. Talk to your academic advisor if it's something you are interested in, it might not be too late.

(And Kudos to that, all I ever hear regarding faculty feuds is that we're big bastards - and actually, we rarely start anything [as a group of reds/frosh on frosh week]. We're just reeeally loud, and respond to people. We DO actually tell our frosh, we don't HATE anybody, and everyones here doing what they want. Personally, I respect someone in humanities doing something they enjoy WAY more than someone in engineering just going through to get the title.)

...though I do have something to bring up... I'm taking theatre and film as a minor through engineering and society, and I have seen so much disrespect and lack of caring from tons of students! Like, one of the only things you have to do to pass successfully is read the plays, and most people Ive talked to in the class have missed at least one. But maybe its just like that in the first couple level of courses... *shrug*
